Lossiemouth: the champion mare and the 2027 Champion Hurdle
Lossiemouth won the 2026 Champion Hurdle by six and a half lengths and is favourite to win it again on 16 March 2027. Her running plan has not been announced. Here is her breeding, her full record, what the form says and how we would bet on her.
Lossiemouth is the reigning Champion Hurdle winner and the horse every other two-mile hurdler has to beat. The grey mare won at Cheltenham in March 2026 by six and a half lengths, added the Punchestown Champion Hurdle in May, and heads the ante-post betting for the 2027 race on Tuesday 16 March. Her target for that day has not been confirmed, and for a bettor that is the first fact that matters.

The Champion Hurdle itself was run on good to soft ground with nine runners. Lossiemouth started the 7/5 favourite, Brighterdaysahead was second and The New Lion third, with the 2025 winner Golden Ace back in fifth. She was the eighth mare to win the race. At Punchestown in May she went clear before the last and beat Golden Ace by five lengths.
What is known about Lossiemouth
Three things stand out from the form.
- Cheltenham suits her. She has never been beaten at the course: the Triumph Hurdle, two Mares' Hurdles, the International Hurdle and the Champion Hurdle.
- She keeps her form all season. She has won from late November to early May in the same campaign, and the Punchestown win came seven weeks after Cheltenham.
- Her defeats came against the very best, or through bad luck. Constitution Hill beat her at Kempton. She fell at Leopardstown when going for the Irish Champion Hurdle in 2025, and a year later Brighterdaysahead beat her in the same race. The Spring Juvenile defeat came as a four-year-old.
Her stable has also shown it is willing to pick the race rather than follow the obvious path. Lossiemouth won the Mares' Hurdle twice before she was aimed at the open championship, and the mares' race remains open to her in 2027. That choice is why we treat her participation as a real question rather than a formality.
Weight matters too. In the Champion Hurdle, horses aged five and over carry 11st 10lb and mares receive a 7lb allowance. Lossiemouth has that allowance every time she meets the geldings, and on her 2026 form she did not need it.
Champion Hurdle 2027: chances and why
The race is a Grade 1 over two miles and 87 yards, with eight hurdles, on the opening day of the festival. On 4 October 2026 the best ante-post price about Lossiemouth was 2/1, with Mydaddypaddy next at 6/1.
Our estimate, not a bookmaker price: if she lines up, we make her about a 40% chance, which is a fair price of 6/4. Allowing for the chance that she goes for the Mares' Hurdle instead or misses the meeting, we put her overall chance at about 30%, close to 9/4. On those numbers 2/1 without non-runner no bet is roughly fair, not generous.
Why we rate her this highly:
- She has the best form in the division: eleven Grade 1 wins, and a clear margin over the 2026 runner-up.
- She has never lost at Cheltenham, and the course is where her finishing speed counts most.
- Last season's beaten horses would need to find several lengths, and the leading novices of 2025–26 have not yet raced against her.
- She still gets the 7lb mares' allowance against the geldings.
Why we stop short of odds-on: she will be eight by racing age, her target is not set, and she has lost twice in the last two seasons at Leopardstown in January and February. A defeat in the Irish Champion Hurdle again would not by itself rule her out, but the price would move.
How to bet on Lossiemouth
The simplest bet is a win single. At 2/1 the each-way part adds little: in a field of eight or more, standard place terms are three places at a fifth of the odds, so the place half pays only 2/5. The each way calculator shows how thin that return is at a short price.
Markets worth knowing for her:
- Ante-post win. The longest price, but the stake is lost if she runs in a different race. That risk is real for this mare.
- Non-runner no bet. Offered closer to the festival, at a shorter price. For a horse with two possible targets, we would wait for it.
- Without the favourite. If you think she wins but want a bet on the rest of the field, this market removes her from the book.
- Match bets. The mare against Mydaddypaddy or the 2026 placed horses, settled on which finishes ahead.
How festival ante-post and NRNB work in practice is set out on our Cheltenham 2027 page, and place terms by field size are on the horse racing hub.

Cheltenham and the Irish meetings where she prepares are shown live by national broadcasters in Britain and Ireland and by the specialist racing channels. Racecourses also post replays of their big races. Outside those two countries, coverage depends on who holds the racing rights locally.
A number of betting sites let account holders watch races live once they are logged in. Several of the sites we list do this, though the meetings each one carries are not the same, so check the racing schedule on the site before the day.
