Horse Racing Betting: The Rules That Decide What You Are Paid
Horse racing betting has its own vocabulary, and most of it is about how a winning bet is paid: each-way place terms, the starting price, Rule 4 deductions when a horse is withdrawn and ante-post bets struck months before the race. Here is what each term means and the big meetings of the year.

Horse racing betting is older than any other form of sports betting, and it shows in the language. Each way, place terms, SP, Rule 4, ante-post, non-runner no bet: each term changes what a winning ticket actually pays. Most new racing bettors learn them the expensive way. This page explains them in the order you meet them.

Win and each way
A win bet pays if the horse finishes first. An each-way bet is two bets of the same stake: one to win, one to place. A ten-unit each-way bet costs twenty.
If the horse wins, both parts pay. If it finishes in the places, only the place part pays, at a fraction of the win odds. Each way is how most racing bettors back a horse at a long price: the place part softens the loss when it runs well without winning.
Place terms: how many places, at what fraction
The number of places paid and the fraction depend on the number of runners and the type of race. The standard terms used by most bookmakers in British and Irish racing are:
| Runners | Race type | Places paid | Fraction of win odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5–7 | Any | 2 | 1/4 |
| 8 or more | Non-handicap | 3 | 1/5 |
| 12–15 | Handicap | 3 | 1/4 |
| 16 or more | Handicap | 4 | 1/4 |
Many sites offer extra places on the biggest races, paying five, six or more places at a reduced fraction. Extra places are worth more than they look on a horse priced to run well rather than win.
Fixed odds, SP and Rule 4
When you take a price, you have fixed odds. The starting price, or SP, is the official price at the off. If your horse drifts, the fixed price you took was better; if it shortens, the SP would have been. Some sites pay the better of the two on selected races.
Rule 4 is the deduction that surprises everyone the first time. When a horse is withdrawn after the market has formed, the remaining horses have a better chance of winning, so fixed-odds winnings are reduced. The deduction depends on the withdrawn horse's price: a short-priced favourite pulling out can take a large share off your winnings, an outsider almost nothing. SP bets are not affected, because the starting price is formed after the withdrawal.
Forecasts, tricasts and multiples
A forecast picks the first two in the correct order; a reverse forecast covers both orders for twice the stake. A tricast adds third place. These are priced by a formula from the starting prices, not by the bookmaker in advance.
Multiples such as doubles, trebles and the Lucky 15, which combines four selections into fifteen bets, are the traditional way to back several horses across a card. Payouts on four winners in a Lucky 15 can be very large from a small stake.
Ante-post and non-runner no bet
Ante-post bets are struck before the final declarations, often weeks or months before a big race. The prices are longer because of the risk: if the horse does not run, the stake is normally lost.
Around the biggest festivals, many sites switch on non-runner no bet, which returns the stake if your horse does not run. It changes the arithmetic of ante-post betting completely, so it is worth waiting for if you are betting early.

- Cheltenham Festival, March: four days of jump racing, the most bet meeting in Britain and Ireland.
- The Grand National, Aintree, April: a long-distance handicap chase with a big field, the most bet single race in Britain.
- The Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs, the first Saturday in May: the first leg of the US Triple Crown.
- Royal Ascot, June: five days of flat racing.
- The Breeders' Cup, late October or early November: two days of championship races in the United States.
- The Melbourne Cup, Flemington, the first Tuesday in November: a two-mile handicap that stops Australia.
Horse racing betting and payout limits
Racing is the sport of the long shot. An ante-post winner, a tricast or a Lucky 15 with four winners can return far more than a normal withdrawal. Every operator below names a withdrawal ceiling and a point where identity documents can be requested; the grid shows both, as written in each site's own terms.

Where to watch
Racing is broadcast by dedicated channels in each country, and racecourses publish replays. Some betting sites also stream races inside the account to signed-in players; the sites we chose include some that do, with meetings that vary from day to day.
The other sports are on the sports betting hub, and the full ranking of sites on the home page. Sites that pay out quickest are on the fast withdrawal betting sites page.
