Half Yours: Can the 2025 Cup Winner Defend Under 59kg?
Half Yours won the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup within 17 days in 2025. He returns to Flemington on 3 November as top weight, without a win in six starts since, and the market still has him near the top.
Half Yours is the reigning Melbourne Cup winner and one of the three shortest prices for the 2026 race at Flemington on Tuesday 3 November. A year ago he went from a Benchmark-race horse to the winner of the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup in one spring. This time he has 59kg, the top weight, and he has not won since that November afternoon. Those two facts decide whether his price is worth taking.

Record
His first wins came in maiden and Benchmark races in Victoria in 2024 and early 2025. The rise started in Sydney and Queensland in the winter of 2025, and the spring that followed is the reason he is on this page.

Career: 21 starts, 8 wins, 3 seconds, no thirds. In 2026: six starts, no wins, no placings.
In the 2025 Cup he beat Goodie Two Shoes, who carried 51.5kg, with Middle Earth third. Jamie Melham became the first woman to ride a Melbourne Cup winner since Michelle Payne in 2015, and the first woman to ride the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup double.
What is known about Half Yours
He stays. Both of his Group 1 wins came at 2400m and 3200m, and he won the longer of the two more easily. The McEvoys have used shorter races to build fitness rather than to win: Tony McEvoy said after a Flemington trial that in a 1000-metre race he would be run off his legs, which is a plain admission that sprints are not his race.
The 2026 runs are preparation, but the numbers still matter. Fourth three times in Queensland, then sixth over a mile and fifth over 2000m on a heavy track, all under 59kg. None of those races were at a distance that suits him. Even so, he finished 6.5 lengths behind Cosmic Crusader in the Turnbull, and Aeliana, also aimed at the Cup, finished almost four lengths in front of him.
The weight is the big change. He won the 2025 Cup with 53kg. The handicapper gave him 59kg for 2026, six kilograms more, and he is top weight. Each extra kilogram over two miles costs ground; this is the oldest debate in Australian staying racing and there is no clean figure for it, but six kilograms is a lot.
The plan is set. The stable mapped out the Makybe Diva, the Turnbull and the Cox Plate as his lead-up to the Cup, Last year he went through the Naturalism Stakes, the Turnbull and the Caulfield Cup instead, so the route is new.
Melbourne Cup 2026: chances and why
The Melbourne Cup is a 3200m handicap with a maximum field of 24. As of 5 October, the market published by races.com.au had Half Yours at around $10, second behind the Irish stayer Defiantly and just ahead of Aeliana.
Our estimate: about 6 per cent, a fair price near 16/1 ($17). This is our estimate, not a bookmaker price. The reasons:
- Six kilograms more. No profile of his 2025 win can ignore that he won with 53kg. At 59kg he is not the same proposition.
- No win in six starts. None of his 2026 runs were over a Cup trip, but none showed the turn of foot he had last spring either.
- He handles the trip and the track. He is proven at 3200m at Flemington, which many in the field cannot claim.
- The jockey knows him. Melham has ridden him in every start of his two-Cup spring and all of 2026.
- History is against repeat winners. Only Rain Lover (1968, 1969) and Makybe Diva (2003 to 2005) have won consecutive runnings.
Our view: at around $10 the market prices him on last year's result. We would want a bigger price, or a strong Cox Plate run, before backing him to win.
SportsbookSportsbook and casino in one accountOpen sportsbook18+ · read the terms before your first depositHow to bet on Half Yours
- Win. The simplest bet, and the one where the price matters most. Convert any quote to a percentage with the odds calculator and compare it with your own number.
- Each way. In a field of up to 24 the place part is what many bettors are really buying. Place terms on the Cup vary from site to site, so check the number of places and the fraction before you stake. Work out both halves of the bet with the each-way calculator.
- Ante-post versus final field. Backing him now locks in today's price, but if he is scratched you usually lose the stake. The final field is set on Saturday 31 October; second acceptances close at noon on 13 October.
- Head-to-heads and top-four markets. Some sites price matchups between leading runners, which suits a view on Half Yours against one rival rather than the whole field.
Starting price, Rule 4 and how place terms change with field size are covered in our horse racing betting rules.
Where to watch
The Melbourne Cup is shown live by national broadcasters in Australia and by the racing channels that hold rights in other countries. A number of betting sites also stream Australian racing inside a funded account. We have picked sites where that service exists, but the meetings each one carries are not the same, so check the race list before Cup day.
