Golf Betting: A Field of 150, Four Days and the Dead-Heat Rule
Golf betting is the longest-priced sport on any sportsbook. A field of more than a hundred players, four rounds and a winner who is often priced at 30/1 or longer. Here is how outright and each-way golf bets work, why dead heats cut so many payouts, and how matchups and top-finish markets narrow the field.

Golf is the only major sport where the favourite is usually expected to lose. Even the world number one at the height of their form is rarely priced shorter than 4/1 against a full field, and most tournaments are won by someone at 20/1 or longer. That makes golf betting a game of long prices, each-way terms and the small print about ties.

Outright winner and each way
The outright market is the winner after seventy-two holes, play-off included. With more than a hundred players in a typical field, prices are long, and the bookmaker's margin across the whole market is wider than in any team sport.
That is why most golf betting is each way. The place part pays if your player finishes in the top places, at a fraction of the win odds. Standard terms are five places at a quarter, but on big tournaments many sites pay extra places, eight, ten or more, at a fifth or a sixth. On a player priced at 40/1, the extra places are often worth more than the win part.
The dead-heat rule
Ties are everywhere in golf. Several players often finish level on the same score, and when they share a paying position, the dead-heat rule applies: the stake is divided by the number of players tied for that position.
| Bet | Tie for the last paying place | What you are paid on |
|---|---|---|
| Top 10, 1 unit | Your player and two others tie for 10th | One third of the stake at full odds |
| Each way, 5 places | Your player and one other tie for 5th | Half the place stake at place odds |
| Top 20, 1 unit | Your player alone in 20th | The full stake |
Dead heats are the most common reason a golf bet pays less than expected. They are in every sportsbook's golf rules and they cannot be avoided, only allowed for.
Top finishes, matchups and first-round leader
Top 5, 10, 20 and 40 markets pay if the player finishes inside the position, with the dead-heat rule applied to ties. They suit consistent players who rarely win.
Two-ball and three-ball bets pit the players in one group against each other for a single round. They are close to a coin flip in price, and they settle in a day.
Tournament matchups set two players against each other over all four rounds. If one misses the cut, the other wins.
First-round leader is a one-day outright with long prices and frequent dead heats. Early starters on calm mornings have an edge that the market does not always reflect.
The majors and the tours
The four majors are the Masters at Augusta in April, the PGA Championship in May, the US Open in June and The Open Championship in July. They carry the deepest markets and the most generous each-way terms.
Week to week, sportsbooks price the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and LIV Golf, along with the women's LPGA Tour. The Ryder Cup, held every two years between Europe and the United States, is a team event with its own markets: match results, the total points and the overall winner.
What moves golf odds
- Course fit. Long courses favour long hitters; tight, tree-lined courses reward accuracy.
- Weather and the draw. Wind on one half of the draw can decide a tournament before the weekend.
- Recent form. Strokes gained statistics over the last few months are the best single guide.
- The cut. Players who miss it after two rounds lose outright and most place bets.
Live golf betting
Golf is played over four days, so live markets move slowly at first and then very quickly on Sunday afternoon. A two-shot lead with nine holes left is far from safe, and live prices on the leaders often overreact to a single birdie. Watching the course conditions for players still to finish is the edge.
Golf betting and big payouts
A 50/1 winner backed each way, or a first-round leader at 60/1, is the kind of payout that can cross a site's withdrawal ceiling or its verification trigger. Each operator below names both in its own terms.

Where to watch
Golf is broadcast by national rights holders and the tours' own services, and the majors each have official coverage. Some betting sites also show selected golf to signed-in accounts; we looked for that when choosing sites, and the tournaments covered vary.
Horse racing, with its own each-way rules, is on the horse racing betting page. Every other sport is on the sports betting hub, and the ranking of sites on the home page.

Each profile covers form, major record, the courses that suit the player and our estimate for the next big event.
