AFL Betting: Reading the Line, the Margin and the Goal Kickers
AFL betting is Australia's winter habit: eighteen teams, high scores and a line market that does most of the work. Here is how head-to-head, line and total points markets work, how goals and behinds shape the scoring, how player markets such as disposals are priced, and what the off-season futures look like.

Australian rules football is played on an oval up to twice the size of a football pitch, by eighteen players a side, with scores that regularly pass a hundred points per team. AFL betting has grown into one of the biggest betting markets in Australia, and it has its own rhythm: a home-and-away season from March to August, four weeks of finals, and a Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

How AFL is scored
Scoring decides how the markets are built, so it comes first.
- A goal is kicked between the two tall centre posts and is worth six points.
- A behind goes between a tall post and a short post, hits a post or is touched before crossing the line, and is worth one point.
A score is written as goals, behinds and total, so 14.10 (94) means fourteen goals, ten behinds and ninety-four points. Accuracy in front of goal varies from team to team and from week to week, and wet weather reduces it sharply.
Head-to-head and the line
Head-to-head is the winner. Draws are possible in home-and-away matches, though rare. Depending on the site, a drawn head-to-head bet is settled as a dead heat, half the stake paid at full odds, or the draw is offered as a separate outcome.
The line is the handicap, and it is the backbone of AFL betting. Because mismatches are frequent, favourites often start at -20 points or more, and the line makes the question a fair one again. Half-point lines such as -18.5 remove the chance of a push.
Totals and margins
Total points lines usually sit somewhere between 150 and 180 points per match. Weather is the biggest single factor: rain and wind make the ball hard to handle and kicks hard to land, and totals drop when bad weather is forecast. Roofed stadiums take the weather out of it.
Winning margin markets split the result into bands, most commonly 1–39 and 40 or more for each team, with narrower bands at some sites. They pay more than the line because they ask for more precision.
Goal kickers and disposals
Goal kicker markets cover the first goal of the match, anytime goals and two-plus or three-plus goals. Key forwards dominate them, and team selection, released before each round, matters: a forward named on the bench or in a different position changes the picture.
Disposal markets ask how many times a player kicks or handballs the ball. Midfielders lead them, and the lines move with tagging: a player assigned a direct opponent whose job is to stop them often falls short of their usual numbers.
Futures: the premiership and the Brownlow
The season is over by early autumn in the northern hemisphere, but AFL betting does not stop. Premiership futures for the next season open as soon as the Grand Final ends, and they move through the trade period and the draft in October and November.
The Brownlow Medal goes to the best and fairest player of the home-and-away season, voted by the umpires after every match on a 3-2-1 basis. Brownlow markets run all season and close on the night of the count, the week of the Grand Final. They reward people who have watched the umpires' habits as much as the players.

AFL suits live betting because scoring is frequent and momentum swings are large. A team can kick five goals in ten minutes and turn a match around. Lines and totals are updated throughout, and quarter-by-quarter markets add shorter questions. The usual caution applies: the stream may lag behind the live price, and bets on events the site already knows about will not stand.

Where to watch
AFL matches are broadcast by the league's rights holders in Australia and by partners overseas, and the league streams selected content on its own channels. Some betting sites also show selected matches to signed-in accounts; the sites we picked include ones that do this, though the matches on offer change from round to round.
Rugby is on the rugby betting page, cricket on the cricket betting page, and every sport on the sports betting hub.
