Rugby Betting: Where the Handicap Does the Work
Rugby betting is a handicap game. Mismatches are common, favourites win most matches, and the price on the winner alone is often too short to bother with. Here is how the handicap, winning margin and try scorer markets work in union and league, and what the Six Nations and the next World Cup mean for prices.

In most sports, the winner is the obvious bet. In rugby it often is not. A big union nation against a smaller one can be priced at 1.01, and even evenly matched sides produce clear favourites more often than football does. That is why rugby betting revolves around the handicap: it turns almost every match into a question worth asking.

The handicap
The bookmaker gives the underdog a points start, sized so that both sides are close to even money. A favourite at -12.5 must win by thirteen or more; the underdog at +12.5 covers by losing by twelve or fewer, or by winning.
Handicaps in rugby are large compared to other sports, because the gaps between teams are large. A Six Nations match between two of the stronger sides might carry a handicap of three to seven points; a World Cup pool match between a tier-one nation and a newcomer can run past fifty.
Winning margin and totals
Winning margin markets split the result into bands: home by 1–12, home by 13 or more, away by 1–12, away by 13 or more, and the draw. Some sites use narrower bands of five or seven points. They pay more than the handicap because they ask for more precision.
Total points markets set a line for the combined score. Weather moves them more than anything: wind and rain make handling difficult and kicking unreliable, and totals drop when bad weather is forecast.
Try scorers
Try scorer markets come in three forms:
- First try scorer – long prices, high margin, settled by the first try of the match.
- Anytime try scorer – the player scores at least once. The most popular player market.
- Last try scorer – the mirror of the first, often decided in the final minutes.
Wingers score most tries in open matches; hookers and back-row forwards score from driving mauls close to the line. Read the team sheet first: a player named on the bench has fewer minutes to score, and some sites settle on whether the player takes part at all.
Union and league
Rugby union has fifteen players a side, lineouts and contested scrums. Its big competitions are the Six Nations, the Rugby Championship, the European Champions Cup and domestic leagues in England, France, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Italy, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Rugby league has thirteen players, a tackle count and more tries per match. The NRL in Australia and the Super League in England and France are the main betting competitions, along with State of Origin.
The markets are the same in both codes. The numbers are not: totals and try prices that make sense in one would be wrong in the other. League handicaps also tend to be smaller between evenly matched sides, because the set of six tackles gives both teams regular possession, while union handicaps can run very wide when a dominant pack controls the ball.
The Six Nations and the World Cup
The Six Nations runs from early February to March, with England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales playing each other once. It is the most bet rugby competition in Europe, and its outright and Grand Slam markets open long before the first match.
The men's Rugby World Cup 2027 will be played in Australia in October and November 2027, with twenty-four teams. Outright prices are already available and will move with the autumn internationals and the Six Nations.

Rugby suits live betting because momentum shifts are visible and slow to price. A yellow card leaves a team with fourteen players for ten minutes, and the handicap and totals both react. Late in a match, a team chasing a losing bonus point, awarded in many competitions for losing by seven or fewer, can change how the final minutes are played.

Where to watch
Rugby is broadcast by national rights holders, and many unions and leagues stream selected matches on their own channels. Some betting sites also show selected rugby to signed-in accounts; we picked sites where that is available, and the competitions covered differ.
Australian rules football is on the AFL betting page, football on the football betting page, and everything else on the sports betting hub.
