MLB Betting: Starting Pitchers, Ballparks and the Longest Season
MLB betting is a moneyline sport. Games are close, upsets are frequent, and the starting pitcher matters more than anyone else on the field. Here is how baseball odds work, what 'listed pitchers' means on your bet slip, and how ballparks and weather change the total.

Baseball is the sport of the moneyline. Even the best team in the league loses about a third of its games, and the worst wins about a third, so prices are tighter and upsets more common than in almost any other team sport. MLB betting rewards patience over a long season, and one piece of information above all: who is pitching.

The three main MLB markets
- Moneyline. The winner, extra innings included. Favourites are rarely priced shorter than -250, because the gap between teams on any given day is small.
- Run line. The spread, almost always 1.5 runs. A favourite at -1.5 pays more than its moneyline but has to win by two; an underdog at +1.5 covers any one-run loss.
- Total. Combined runs over or under a line, usually between 7 and 10, depending on the pitchers and the ballpark.
The starting pitcher, and listed pitchers on the slip
The starting pitcher is the most important player in any baseball game. A team's moneyline can move sharply between an ace and a fifth starter, which is why MLB betting slips ask how you want to handle a pitching change.
Listed pitchers means your bet stands only if both named starters actually start. If a pitcher is scratched, the bet is void and your stake is returned.
Action means your bet stands whoever pitches, and the price may be adjusted to reflect the change.
For most bettors, listed pitchers is the safer choice: you bet on the matchup you studied.
First five innings
A first five innings bet, often written F5, is settled on the score after five innings. It removes the bullpen, the relief pitchers who take over in the late innings, from the equation. If your view is about the starting pitchers rather than the whole roster, F5 lets you bet exactly that view. It is especially useful when a team with a strong starter has a tired or unreliable bullpen, because the full-game price has to account for the late innings and the F5 price does not.
Ballparks and weather
No other sport has playing fields that differ as much. Ballparks vary in their dimensions, their altitude and how the wind blows through them, and those differences show up in the totals. A hitter-friendly park at altitude pushes totals up; a large park near the sea pulls them down.
Weather matters too. Wind blowing out toward the outfield turns fly balls into home runs, and cold air shortens them. The total for the same two teams can be a full run different between a warm summer evening and a cold April night.
Props and the long season
Player props in MLB betting cover strikeouts for the starting pitcher, hits, total bases, home runs and more. Pitcher strikeout lines are among the most popular, because they depend on one player and one matchup.
Thirty teams play one hundred and sixty-two games each between late March and late September. Over that many games, streaks come and go, and the teams that look best in May are not always there in September. Futures on the World Series, the pennants and the divisions are priced all season.
The postseason
Twelve teams reach the postseason, which runs through October and ends with the World Series. Rotations shorten, the best pitchers start more often, and short series make upsets common. Postseason MLB betting is closer to betting on pitching duels than on the regular season.

Baseball's pauses suit live betting: markets reopen between pitches and between innings. The key moments are pitching changes, when a tiring starter leaves and the bullpen takes over, and the middle innings of close games. As in every live market, the stream may lag behind the price, and bets on events the site already knows about will be cancelled.

Five checks decide the order, all read from the operators' own terms: when documents can be requested, how much can be withdrawn, which coins the cashier names, the licence, and whether the register confirms it.

Baseball is mostly singles and short parlays, so ceilings rarely matter. The identity trigger in the table is the number to know.

Where to watch
MLB games are carried by national broadcasters and the league's own streaming service in many countries. Some betting sites also show selected games to signed-in accounts; we chose sites that offer it, and which games appear varies from one site to another.
More North American sports are on the ice hockey betting and NFL betting pages, and every sport is on the sports betting hub.
