NHL Betting: Two Moneylines, One Puck Line and the Goalie Question
NHL betting has a trap built into its first market: one moneyline includes overtime and the shootout, the other is settled after sixty minutes with the tie as a third outcome. Here is how both work, why the puck line is almost always 1.5, and why the starting goaltender moves the price more than anyone else.

Hockey is fast, low-scoring and closer to football than to basketball in one important way: a lot of games are level after sixty minutes. That single fact shapes NHL betting. It is why there are two different moneylines, why the puck line is fixed at 1.5, and why a goal scored into an empty net with a minute left settles more bets than any goal in the first period.

Two moneylines: read which one you are backing
| Market | Settled on | Outcomes | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moneyline | Final result, including overtime and shootout | Two | The standard NHL bet |
| 60-minute line (three-way) | Regulation time only | Home, tie, away | Backing a draw, or longer prices on a winner |
| Puck line | Final result, including overtime and shootout | Two, with a 1.5-goal handicap | Favourites at a better price |
| Total | Final result, including overtime; a shootout adds one goal to the winner | Over or under | Usually 5.5 or 6.5 |
The standard moneyline is what most bettors mean by NHL betting. The three-way line pays more on a winner because it loses when the game goes to overtime. Mixing them up is the most common mistake new hockey bettors make.
The puck line and the empty net
The puck line is hockey's spread, and it almost never moves from 1.5 goals. What moves is the price on each side. A strong favourite at -1.5 can be priced near even money; an underdog at +1.5 is usually short.
Late in a game, a team that is behind pulls its goaltender for an extra skater. That creates the empty-net goal, and it settles a remarkable number of puck line and total bets. A favourite leading by one goal with two minutes left has a real chance to cover -1.5, because the opponent has left its net empty.
The goaltender moves the price
No single position matters more to NHL betting than the goaltender. One player faces every shot, and the gap between a starter and the backup can be worth more than any skater's absence. Teams confirm their starting goalies on the morning of the game or at the morning skate, and prices move as soon as they do.
Back-to-back games make the question sharper: most teams rest their starting goalie on one of the two nights. Betting before the confirmation is a guess about the goalie; betting after is a bet on the game.
Totals and period betting
NHL totals are usually 5.5 or 6.5 goals, with the price on each side doing most of the work. A shootout counts as one goal for the winning team in the total at most sites.
Period betting splits the game into three. First-period markets are popular because they settle quickly and before coaches adjust; third-period markets are shaped by teams protecting leads and chasing them.
The NHL season
Thirty-two teams play eighty-two games each from October to April, followed by four rounds of best-of-seven playoffs for the Stanley Cup. The regular season is long enough that streaks of luck and bad luck both happen, and shooting percentage is the number most likely to come back to normal.
Outside North America, sportsbooks also price the KHL, the Swedish, Finnish, Swiss, Czech and German leagues, and the World Championship each spring. Fewer bettors follow them closely, and margins are wider.

Hockey changes fast: power plays, penalties and the late empty net all move live prices sharply. Live totals are especially sensitive to game state. A 1–0 game in the third period can still go over 5.5 when both nets open up late. The usual caution applies: the stream may be behind the live price, and bets on events the site already knows about will not stand.
Paying out NHL winnings
Most hockey bets are small. Where limits matter is in multiples across a full night of games. Each operator below names a withdrawal ceiling and the point where identity documents can be requested; the grid shows both, from each site's own terms.

Where to watch
NHL games are broadcast by national rights holders and through the league's own streaming service in many countries. Some betting sites also show selected games to signed-in accounts; a few of the sites we chose do so, and the games on offer vary.
The other North American leagues are on the NFL betting and basketball betting pages, and every sport is on the sports betting hub.
