Darts Betting: How Format Changes Every Price
Darts betting looks like one market, the winner, but the format decides almost everything about it. A match over legs is a sprint; a match over sets is a test of endurance. Here is how sets and legs change the odds, how 180s, checkout and handicap markets work, and what the World Championship and Premier League bring.

Darts has become one of the most bet sports in Britain and the Netherlands, and the markets have grown with it. The winner is still the starting point, but darts betting rewards anyone who looks at the format first. The same two players can be priced very differently in a short match over legs and in a long match over sets.

Sets, legs and why the format matters
A leg is a single game, played from 501 down to exactly zero, finishing on a double. Most tour events are decided over legs: first to six in the early rounds, longer in the later ones.
A set is a group of legs, usually best of five. The World Championship is played in sets, which makes matches much longer.
The longer the match, the more often the better player wins. A short match over legs gives the underdog a real chance, because a couple of good legs can be enough. A long match over sets gives the favourite time to recover. Darts betting prices reflect this, and anyone comparing a player's price across two events should compare the formats first.
The main darts markets
| Market | What you back | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Match winner | Either player | Two-way; draws are possible only in some league formats |
| Correct score | The exact score in sets or legs | Long prices, popular for close matches |
| Handicap | A start in legs or sets | Turns a mismatch into a contest |
| Total legs | More or fewer legs than a line | Tracks how close the match is |
| Most 180s | Which player throws more maximums | Depends on scoring power, not winning |
| Total 180s | Over or under a line for the match | Grows with match length |
| Highest checkout | The best finish of the match | Lines such as 100.5; the maximum is 170 |
| Nine-darter | A perfect leg in the match or event | Rare; long odds |
Averages, checkouts and 180s
The three-dart average is the best single measure of a player's scoring. The top players average close to or above one hundred; a gap of five points in average between two players is a real difference.
Checkout percentage measures how often a player hits the double when it matters. A high scorer with a poor checkout percentage wins fewer matches than the average suggests, and loses more close ones.
Who throws first matters too. In a leg, the player throwing first has the advantage, because a fast finish can end the leg before the opponent reaches a double. Breaks of throw are to darts what breaks of serve are to tennis, and the handicap and correct score markets turn on them.
Maximum 180s depend on scoring power more than on winning. A heavy scorer can throw more 180s and still lose the match, which is why “most 180s” is a separate market and often a better one.
The big events
- The PDC World Championship, from mid-December into early January at Alexandra Palace, London. Played in sets, with the longest matches of the year. The 2027 edition runs from 11 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, and our World Darts Championship odds page covers the draw, the prize money and the outright market.
- The Premier League, weekly from February to May, with a group of the world's top players meeting in short knockout nights and finishing with a play-off night.
- The World Matchplay in July and the World Grand Prix, which requires a double to start each leg as well as to finish it.
- The Grand Slam and Players Championship Finals in November, closing the season before the World Championship.
Week to week, the PDC's Players Championship and European Tour events fill the calendar, with shorter formats and more surprises.

Darts suits live betting: legs are short, and markets reopen after each one. Players' form can change within a match, and a player who misses doubles early often settles. As always, the stream may be behind the live price, and bets on legs already decided will not stand.
Paying out darts winnings
Darts bets are mostly small, but a correct score at long odds or a nine-darter special can return a lot. Each operator below names a withdrawal ceiling and the point where identity documents can be requested.

Where to watch
The PDC sells broadcast rights by country and streams many events on its own service. Some betting sites also show selected darts to signed-in accounts; the sites on this page include some that do, with coverage that varies by event.
Snooker has its own snooker betting page, every sport is on the sports betting hub, and the full ranking of sites is on the home page.
