Cameron Young profile: world number four, three wins in a year and the Augusta question

Record: wins and major finishes

The first win took a long time. Young won the Wyndham Championship in August 2025 after seven runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour, and then two more arrived inside nine months.

His major record shows how close he has come. Across 22 major starts he has two seconds, two thirds and eight top-10 finishes:

• Masters: missed cut 2022, tied 7th 2023, tied 9th 2024, missed cut 2025, tied 3rd 2026
• PGA Championship: tied 3rd 2022, then nothing better than tied 26th
• US Open: tied 4th 2025, his only top 10 in seven starts
• The Open: 2nd in 2022 and 2026, tied 8th 2023

At Birkdale he started the final day seven shots behind, shot 64 and sat in the clubhouse lead for more than two hours before Fox caught and passed him. At The Players he birdied the 17th to tie Fitzpatrick, hit a drive of 375 yards down the 18th and two-putted for the title. The win lifted him to fourth in the world, and he finished the regular season third in the FedEx Cup standings.

What is known about Cameron Young

Length that gains shots. The PGA Tour's own figures before The Open had him 12th on tour in strokes gained off the tee and 28th in driving distance at 312.6 yards. That is distance he converts, not distance for its own sake.

A complete tee-to-green game. He ranked 25th in strokes gained on approach, 32nd around the green and 10th in strokes gained total. All three tee-to-green numbers were positive.

The putter is the soft spot. His strokes gained putting stood at −0.019, 85th on tour, slightly below the tour average. Everything else in his game sits well above it, so the putter decides whether a good week becomes a win.

Sunday scoring. The wins and near-misses carry the same pattern: a 65 on Saturday at Augusta to share the lead, a closing 64 at Birkdale. The bad weeks are just as visible. He missed the cut at the 2025 Masters and had no top 25 in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Masters 2027: chances and why

The 2027 Masters is played from 8 to 11 April at Augusta National. Young is going for his first green jacket and, on current form, he will be near the top of the market behind Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

Why we put him there:

1. Augusta suits his long game. Three top-10 finishes from five starts there, and a share of the 54-hole lead in 2026.
2. He is winning now. Three titles since August 2025, two of them in fields as strong as any outside the majors.
3. The invitation is secure. Under the 2026 categories, Players champions of the last three years and the top 12 from the previous Masters are invited, and he qualifies both ways.
4. The putting caps it. A closing 73 cost him in 2026. Augusta's greens punish the weakest part of his game, which is why we do not rate him above 6%.

Ryder Cup 2027: his role at Adare Manor

Jim Furyk captains the United States at Adare Manor, County Limerick, from 17 to 19 September 2027. The American points race opens at The American Express in January 2027 and closes after the BMW Championship in August, with six automatic places and six picks. A major is worth 3,000 points to the winner and The Players 2,850.

Young's case is strong. He was a pick at Bethpage and scored three points from four matches: a 6 and 5 four-ball win with Justin Thomas, a 4 and 2 foursomes win with Bryson DeChambeau and a 1 up singles win over Justin Rose. He was second on the US points list for the 2026 Presidents Cup, which the Americans won at Medinah. Points reset for 2027, so nothing is banked yet. Two other Americans in the world's top six, Wyndham Clark and Russell Henley, start the same race.

• Outright win. The price is short in signature events and in majors. In a 72-hole event, the win alone is a thin bet on a player with a weak putter.
