Matt Fitzpatrick, world number three: a career year and an Augusta question
Matt Fitzpatrick won four times in 2026 and climbed from 22nd at the end of 2025 to third in the world ranking. His iron play has never been better. His Masters record is the reason his price for April 2027 should sit well behind the two players above him.

Matt Fitzpatrick has had the best season of his career and is now third in the world, which puts him in every conversation about the 2027 Masters. He won the Valspar Championship, the RBC Heritage, the Zurich Classic and, in late September, the FedEx Open de France. What he has not done is contend at Augusta: in twelve starts he has never finished inside the top five, and that is the tension a bettor has to price.

The ranking places are close. Fitzpatrick moved up from fourth to third in the latest list, and Cameron Young sits fourth on 7.28, less than two hundredths of a point behind. At the end of 2025 he was 22nd.
His US Open win came on the same course where he had won the US Amateur nine years earlier, which made him only the second man after Jack Nicklaus to win both titles at one venue.

The Open at Royal Birkdale was his only missed cut in the 21 PGA Tour events ESPN lists for him this year. The win in France was his 11th on the DP World Tour, in his 202nd start there, and lifted him to ninth on the Race to Dubai.
Augusta is the weak spot. He has made the cut in 11 of 12 Masters starts but has only two top-ten finishes: a tie for seventh in 2016 and a tie for tenth in 2023. Recent years read T22, T40 and T18.
What is known about Fitzpatrick's game
Approach play. This is what changed. Before the 2026 Tour Championship, PGA Tour figures had him third in strokes gained approach (0.697 per round) and sixth in greens in regulation at 70.50%. CBS Sports reported that his approach numbers were more than two and a half times his previous best season. He credits a swing change with coach Mark Blackburn that keeps his arms from getting long in the backswing.
Around the green. Fourth on tour, at 0.475 strokes gained per round. Combined with the irons, that made him second in strokes gained total (1.485), between Scheffler and McIlroy.
Off the tee. Not long: 306.1 yards on average, 84th on tour, and 55th in strokes gained off the tee.
Putting. The statistic that lags. He ranked 60th in strokes gained putting and 99th in putts per round, and CBS described it as statistically his worst putting season. It comes and goes: at the Heritage he gained about four strokes on the field with the putter.
Bogey avoidance. Seventh on tour, which fits a player who keeps the ball in play and rarely loses shots in bunches.

The 2027 Masters: chances and why
On the categories Augusta used for 2026, a US Open title brings five years of invitations, so his 2022 win covers 2027. Our estimate for Matt Fitzpatrick, not a bookmaker price: about a 4% chance of winning, a fair price near 24/1. The reasons:
- Form. Four wins and second in strokes gained total make him one of the three best players of 2026 on the numbers.
- Iron play. Augusta's greens punish approaches that finish on the wrong side of the hole, and he is now one of the best on tour into greens.
- Course history. Twelve visits and no top five. His best result is ten years old.
- Length. Mid-pack off the tee counts against him on the par 5s, where longer hitters reach in two.
- Major form. Of the four majors in 2026, his best finish was a tie for 14th.
Our view: the season deserves respect, but his Augusta record does not support a short price. We would look at him for a top-ten or top-twenty finish rather than the outright, and only if the market prices him off his ranking alone.

Outright. A world number three is usually priced off ranking and recent wins. Weigh that against a Masters record that has never produced a top five.
Top 10 and top 20. The natural fit for a player who almost always makes the cut at Augusta. Ties on the final paying place cut the return under the dead-heat rule.
Each way. At a longer price the place part of an each-way bet carries real weight. Check the terms with the each way calculator before staking.
Matchups. Pairing him against a longer hitter with a weaker short game is where his iron play and bogey avoidance count most.
