Aeliana: A Three-Time Group 1 Winner With a Weight Question
Aeliana won the Australian Derby by more than five lengths and took the Ranvet and the Tancred a week apart this autumn. She is among the first three in the Melbourne Cup betting, but her trainer has openly questioned whether she can win it carrying 58kg.
Aeliana has more Group 1 wins than either of the other two Melbourne Cup market leaders, and she is the one least certain to start. Chris Waller's mare has three wins at the top level, all at 2000m or 2400m, and sits around $11 for the race at Flemington on Tuesday 3 November. After weights came out, Waller said 58kg was too much for a mare and that he was reconsidering the Cup. Anyone betting on her now is taking two risks at once: whether she wins, and whether she runs.

Career: 21 starts for 6 wins, 7 seconds and 2 thirds. All seven seconds came in Group races, five of them Group 1, which says as much about her consistency as about how often she has just missed.
The autumn double is the best thing on her record. She won the Ranvet over 2000m and came back seven days later to beat the previous year's winner Dubai Honour by a neck in the Tancred over 2400m, with Vauban almost five lengths further back.
What is known about Aeliana
She gets 2400m well. The Derby was her widest winning margin, and the Tancred was won in a stretch duel at the same trip. Both suggest stamina rather than speed, which is the profile a Cup horse needs. Neither proves she stays 3200m.
She has been placed far more often over a mile. Her 1400m and 1600m runs produce seconds; her wins at the top level all came at 2000m or more. This spring she ran over 1400m and 1600m before stepping up to 2000m, which reads as a build-up rather than a target.
The Turnbull run was better than third looks. On a heavy track she finished about a length behind the second, Light Infantry Man, and Damian Lane said the race shape did not suit where she was in her preparation and that she would be peaking at her next start. The races.com.au report still described her as Cup-bound.
The weight is a real argument, not a talking point. Waller told reporters after the weights that 58kg for a mare was the equivalent of 60kg for a colt or gelding, and asked whether she could win a Melbourne Cup with that. Coming from her own trainer, that is the strongest piece of evidence against backing her now.
Melbourne Cup 2026: chances and why
The Cup is a 3200m handicap capped at 24 runners. On 5 October the races.com.au market had the Irish stayer Defiantly at $9, last year's winner Half Yours at $10 and Aeliana at $11.
Our estimate: about 7 per cent if she starts, a fair price close to 13/1 ($14). This is our estimate, not a bookmaker price. Weighed against the chance she is withdrawn, an ante-post bet at $11 looks short to us. The reasons:
- Class. Three Group 1 wins, more than either of the other two market leaders.
- 58kg on a mare. Her trainer's own words. Half Yours, the top weight, has only a kilogram more.
- An untested trip. 2400m is her limit so far; the Cup asks for another 800 metres.
- She is improving at the right time. Second in the Seven Sunrise, third in the Turnbull, and her jockey expects more next time.
- The start is not settled. Waller has said he is reconsidering. Until second acceptances close, that risk sits on every ante-post ticket.
Our pick between the three: on these numbers Defiantly is closer to fair value. Aeliana is the one to watch at the declarations, not the one to back today.
SportsbookSportsbook and casino in one accountOpen sportsbook18+ · read the terms before your first depositHow to bet on Aeliana
- Wait for the field. The biggest risk with her is a scratching. A starting-price bet or a fixed price taken after the field is declared on Saturday 31 October avoids it, at the cost of a shorter price.
- Win or each way. In a large Cup field a horse of her class has a fair chance of a place even if the extra distance catches her late. The each-way calculator shows the return under the terms each site offers.
- Read the price as a percentage. $11 means about 9 per cent. Put any quote through the odds calculator and compare it with your own figure.
- Matchups. Where a site prices her against Half Yours or Defiantly head to head, you are betting on one rival at a time instead of 23, and the scratching risk usually voids the bet rather than losing it. Read the site's rules on non-runners first.
How each-way terms change with field size, and what a Rule 4 deduction does to a winning bet, is set out in the horse racing hub.
Where to watch
The Cup is carried live by national broadcasters in Australia and by racing channels that hold the rights overseas. Some betting sites let account holders watch Australian racing in their own player. We picked sites that offer this, but coverage of individual meetings is uneven between them, so check the schedule first.
