The 153rd Kentucky Derby is run at Churchill Downs on 1 May 2027, and the first futures prices are already moving on the back of two-year-old races this autumn. Here is how horses earn a place in the gate, how Derby bets are paid and what the juvenile form says so far.

Seven months before the race, Kentucky Derby odds are mostly a guess about which two-year-olds will train on. The colts that win in October are not always the ones standing in the gate in May, and the prices reflect that. This page covers the race itself, last year's result, the points system that decides the field and how to read the early futures market.

The race: Churchill Downs, 1¼ miles, 20 runners

The Kentucky Derby is a race for three-year-olds over one and a quarter miles on the dirt at Churchill Downs. The 153rd running is on Saturday 1 May 2027, with post time scheduled for about 6:57 pm Eastern, which is just before midnight in the UK.

The field is capped at 20, with up to four also-eligibles named in case of a late withdrawal. Twenty runners on a mile-and-a-quarter dirt track means traffic, a long run to the first turn and a lot of horses who never get a clear run. That is why the Derby is so often a race for closers and long prices, as the last running showed.

The 2026 Derby in brief

The 152nd Derby on 2 May 2026 was a fair example. Golden Tempo went off at 23–1 and was at the back of the field entering the final turn. José Ortiz brought him wide in the straight and he caught the favourite Renegade to win by a neck, with the 70–1 shot Ocelli third. The winning time on a fast track was 2:02.27.

Two firsts came with it. Cherie DeVaux became the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner, and it was José Ortiz's first Derby as a jockey. Twenty went to post after five scratches, one of them Great White, who reared and fell at the initial gate load.

For bettors, the lesson was the usual one. A favourite with a clean trip still lost to a closer at a long price, and the exotic payouts with a 70–1 horse in the frame were large.

Road to the Kentucky Derby: how the points work

Places in the gate are not handed out on earnings or ratings. Horses earn points for finishing in the top five of designated races, and the 20 highest scorers get in. Earnings in non-restricted stakes break ties. Separate qualifying routes run through Japan, which holds one place, and through Europe and the Middle East, which hold two.

The points rise as the races get closer to May:

StagePoints, 1st to 5thExamples
Autumn juvenile preps10-5-3-2-1Iroquois, Champagne, Breeders' Futurity, American Pharoah, Kentucky Jockey Club
Breeders' Cup Juvenile30-15-9-6-3Keeneland, 30 October 2026
Spring, first leg50-25-15-10-5Gotham, San Felipe and other late-winter preps
Spring, final series100-50-25-15-10Louisiana Derby, Florida Derby, Blue Grass, Santa Anita Derby, Wood Memorial, Arkansas Derby

The arithmetic matters for anyone betting now. Winning a Grade 1 for two-year-olds in October is worth 10 points. Winning the Florida Derby on 27 March is worth 100. The autumn races decide who is talked about, not who qualifies.

The autumn juvenile races

The 2026–27 series opened with the Iroquois at Churchill Downs on 12 September. Three Grade 1 races on 3 October, the American Pharoah at Santa Anita, the Champagne at Belmont Park and the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland, gave the first real form lines.

Next come the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster on 24 October and the Street Sense at Churchill Downs on 25 October. Then the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland on 30 October, the opening day of the 2026 Breeders' Cup, carries 30 points to the winner. After that, the Kentucky Jockey Club on 28 November, the Remsen on 5 December and the Los Alamitos Futurity on 12 December close the two-year-old season.

The spring decides it: the Louisiana Derby on 20 March, the Florida Derby on 27 March, the Blue Grass, Santa Anita Derby and Wood Memorial all on 3 April, and the Arkansas Derby on 10 April 2027.

Betting the Derby: pools, fixed prices and futures

In the United States the Derby is bet through pari-mutuel pools. Every bet of one type goes into a single pool, the operator takes its share, and the rest is divided among the winners. Kentucky Derby odds on the tote board move until the gates open, and you are paid at the final figure, not at the price you saw when you bet.

Sportsbooks outside the US usually offer the race at fixed odds instead. You take a price and keep it, whatever happens to the market. On race day that is a choice between a known number now and a pool price that might drift out or shorten.

The standard bets are:

  • Win, place, show: your horse to finish first, in the first two or in the first three. In American terminology place means second, not a place in the each-way sense.
  • Exacta: the first two in exact order.
  • Trifecta: the first three in exact order.
  • Superfecta: the first four in exact order.

With 20 runners, the exotic bets are where the Derby pays most. A box covers every order of your chosen horses, so a three-horse trifecta box is six combinations, at six times the unit stake.

Futures this early

Futures, known in Britain as ante-post, are bets struck months ahead. Kentucky Derby odds in October are long because most of the horses quoted will not run: injury, a lack of points or a trainer's decision to wait removes many of them. A futures stake is normally lost if the horse does not start, so the price has to pay for that risk. Read the site's rules on non-runners before you bet.

The trade-off is plain. A horse who wins the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and then a spring prep will have much shorter Kentucky Derby odds in April than in October. A horse who goes wrong in the winter is a lost stake. Spread small stakes over several colts rather than one large stake on the current favourite.

Early 2027 view

This is our opinion, built on the 3 October results. It is not a quote of anyone's Kentucky Derby odds.

Hughes, trained by Bob Baffert, is unbeaten and won the American Pharoah at Santa Anita by six lengths. His trainer has said the Breeders' Cup Juvenile is next. U.S.S. Valor, trained by Shug McGaughey, won the Champagne at Belmont Park by six and a quarter lengths and finished strongly. His owner has decided to skip the Juvenile and give him a break. American History, trained by Todd Pletcher, came from well back to win the Breeders' Futurity and stays at Keeneland for the Juvenile.

Our view: Hughes is the horse the early market will lead with, and the Juvenile will either confirm that or open the race up. U.S.S. Valor is the more interesting futures bet. Missing the Juvenile keeps him out of the headlines in November, and a colt who finished like that at two may be suited by the extra distance in May. Expect his price to drift a little before it shortens. That expected price movement is an estimate, not an operator's quote.

Where to watch the Kentucky Derby

The Derby is shown in the United States by the national broadcaster holding the rights, with the race's own channels covering the build-up. Outside the US, coverage depends on each country's broadcast deals, so check your local listings in the week of the race.

A few betting sites also stream selected races to account holders. We have picked out sites that include racing pictures, but which races each one carries changes from site to site, so look at the schedule inside your account rather than assuming the Derby is on.

Streams are shown to signed-in accounts on selected events, and the list differs between betting sites and between matches. 18+.

When is the 2027 Kentucky Derby?
Saturday 1 May 2027 at Churchill Downs. It will be the 153rd running, with post time scheduled for about 6:57 pm Eastern.
Who won the 2026 Kentucky Derby?
Golden Tempo, at 23-1, ridden by José Ortiz and trained by Cherie DeVaux. He came from the back of the field and beat the favourite Renegade by a neck.
How does a horse qualify for the Kentucky Derby?
By collecting points in designated races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The top 20 on the points table get a starting place, with up to four also-eligibles in reserve. Separate routes from Japan and from Europe and the Middle East hold their own places.
Are Kentucky Derby odds in October worth taking?
Only if you accept that many leading two-year-olds never make the gate. Early prices are long because of that risk. A futures stake is normally lost if your horse does not run, so check the site's rules before you bet.
What is the difference between a trifecta and a superfecta?
A trifecta picks the first three in the exact order. A superfecta picks the first four in order. Both pay from a pool and can return large sums from a small stake in a 20-runner race.
