Last Year's Horse of the Year and His Interrupted Road to Keeneland
The 2025 Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner never made it to last year's Classic. This year a foot abscess cost him his final prep. Here is his breeding, every start, how he races and what we think his chance is on 31 October.

Sovereignty is the reigning American Horse of the Year and the second name in the official Longines Classic Rankings, a handful of points behind Forever Young. He won the 2025 Kentucky Derby, the Belmont Stakes and the Travers, then missed last year's Breeders' Cup Classic with a fever. His 2026 build-up to the race at Keeneland on 31 October has been interrupted again: a foot abscess kept him out of the Jockey Club Gold Cup, and trainer Bill Mott is now preparing him for the Classic without another run.

Godolphin bred him and still races him, and Mott has trained him from the start. Bernardini, the sire of his dam, also appears in the pedigree of his stable companion Knightsbridge, whose dam is by the same horse.

The three-year-old season was outstanding: five wins from six starts, the first horse since Justify in 2018 to win two legs of the Triple Crown, and only the fifth ever to add the Travers to the Derby and the Belmont. The ten-length Travers was the widest margin of his career.
The four-year-old season has been patchier. He was beaten on his return in the Oaklawn Handicap and again in the Stephen Foster, before a clear win in the Whitney put him back at the top of the rankings. That makes him one from three in 2026, against two from three for the Japanese champion.
What is known about Sovereignty
He is a closer. In most of his wins he settled in midfield or towards the back early and then made one long run through the field in the straight. That style suits a strongly run mile and a quarter, which is what a Classic usually is, but it leaves him at the mercy of the pace if the leaders are allowed to slow things down.
The trip is not a question. He won the Kentucky Derby over a mile and a quarter and he has won his last four starts at Saratoga, three of them Grade 1 races. What is in doubt is fitness. The abscess developed in early September, he was off the track for more than a week and missed two workouts, and his first timed work in almost a month was a half-mile in :49.40 at Saratoga in late September. Mott said after that breeze that he would run in the Classic barring new problems.

The other unknown is the meeting itself. He has never run at Keeneland, and he has never raced against Forever Young: the two records share no start. He also has never run in a Breeders' Cup race, because the fever ruled him out three days before the 2025 Classic.
Breeders' Cup Classic: chances and why
Our estimate: a 20% chance of winning, a fair price of about 4–1 (5.00 in decimal). This is our estimate, not a bookmaker price.
- Class at the trip. A Derby, a Belmont and a Travers prove he can win at the top level over a mile and a quarter.
- The Whitney. A near-five-length Grade 1 win in August showed the 2025 form is still there.
- Against him: the prep. Twelve weeks without a race and a foot problem in between. Horses can win off that, but it is the main reason we put him behind Forever Young.
- Against him: 2026 defeats. He was beaten twice this year, once by Magnitude, who is also pointed at the Classic.
- Run style. A closer needs a true pace. A Classic field usually provides one, but not always.
Our view: if the late-October works are strong and he is declared, a price of 5–1 or bigger would be worth taking on these numbers. Shorter than 4–1, we would rather back him in a match bet than to win.

The main question for any Sovereignty bet is whether he will start. An ante-post bet placed now is normally lost if he is withdrawn, so a non-runner rule or waiting for the declarations matters more here than with most favourites. - Win or each way. A closer can run on into the frame even when he does not win, which supports an each-way bet if the place terms are generous. The each-way calculator shows what each half returns.
- Match bet against the favourite. A head-to-head with Forever Young takes the rest of the field out of the bet.
- Forecast. A straight or reverse forecast with the two of them is the popular combination bet.
- Price checks. The odds calculator converts any quote to an implied chance so you can set it against our 20%.
His three-year-old season started on the Derby trail; the Kentucky Derby page explains that route. His stable companion Knightsbridge is the horse who would take his place in the Classic if he misses it.

National broadcasters show the Breeders' Cup in the United States, and racing channels pick it up in other countries. Rights change, so look at the official Breeders' Cup website in the week of the meeting for the broadcaster in your country.

Why did Sovereignty miss the Jockey Club Gold Cup?
An abscess in his left hind foot in early September kept him off the track for more than a week and cost him two scheduled workouts. He returned with a four-furlong breeze at Saratoga in late September and is being trained straight to the Classic.
Did he run in the 2025 Breeders' Cup Classic?
No. He was scratched three days before the race after developing a fever, so 31 October would be his first Breeders' Cup start.
Has he ever raced against Forever Young?
Not yet. Their race records have no start in common, which is one reason the Classic is billed as a two-horse clash.
What does the Mott stable plan for Knightsbridge?
Godolphin has said that if the Derby winner runs in the Classic, Knightsbridge will be aimed at the Dirt Mile instead.
