The Japanese Champion Defending His Breeders' Cup Classic Title
The 2025 Classic winner arrives at Keeneland as the top-ranked horse in the race after a two-for-three season. Here is his pedigree, every start of his career, how he wins and what we think a fair price is for 31 October.
Forever Young is the defending Breeders' Cup Classic champion and the horse the rest of the field has to beat at Keeneland on Saturday 31 October 2026. Trained in Japan by Yoshito Yahagi, he won the 2025 Classic at Del Mar by half a length, took a second Saudi Cup in February and came back from almost six months off to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park by three and a quarter lengths on 18 September. He leads the official Longines Classic Rankings and closed as the 5–2 favourite in the second pool of the Breeders' Cup's own Classic future wager.

Sixteen starts, twelve wins and never worse than third. He won his first five races, lost the unbeaten record in a three-way photo for the 2024 Kentucky Derby, and every defeat since has come in a Group 1 race abroad, against the best dirt horses of his generation. The 2025 season made him the first Japan-trained winner of the Classic and the first horse to win the Saudi Cup twice once he repeated in February. He was named Japan's Horse of the Year for 2025 and took the Eclipse Award as American champion older dirt male.
What is known about Forever Young
He is not a one-trick runner. The race records show him tracking the leaders in some starts and sitting further back in others, then making steady progress through the middle of the race and taking over in the straight. That flexibility matters in a Classic, where the pace can be fast or tactical depending on who turns up.
The weaknesses are visible in the defeats. In the 2024 Kentucky Derby he was slow from the gate and settled towards the rear, and still finished only a head away in third. In the 2025 Dubai World Cup he became less comfortable as the field approached the final turn. Meydan is the one track where he has lost twice, and Magnitude, who beat him there in March, is expected in the Classic field.
Two more things matter for bettors. First, he travels: he has won in Japan, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, California and New York. Second, he is lightly raced this year. The Gold Cup was his first run since Dubai, and he still beat Stars and Stripes and Baeza comfortably. A horse who wins off a long break often improves for the run, which is the pattern his trainer will be hoping for.
Breeders' Cup Classic: chances and why
Our estimate: a 28% chance of winning, a fair price of about 5–2 (3.50 in decimal). This is our estimate, not a bookmaker price.
Why we rate him the most likely winner, and why we would not take much shorter:
- He has done it. He won the 2025 Classic over the same mile and a quarter, and he has now won at that trip in New York as well as California.
- The prep was strong. A three-and-a-quarter-length Grade 1 win after nearly six months off suggests he arrives at Keeneland near his best.
- Consistency. Sixteen starts and sixteen top-three finishes. In each-way terms that is the most reliable profile in the race.
- His closest rival has a question mark. Sovereignty missed the Gold Cup with a foot abscess and is being trained straight to the Classic.
- Against him. Keeneland is a new track, and Magnitude has already beaten him once this year. A defending champion also tends to start at a price that leaves little value.
The Breeders' Cup future wager pool had him at 5–2, close to our own figure. At that price we see no edge. At 3–1 or longer on the day, the bet starts to make sense on our numbers.

The win market is where most money goes, but a horse with his record is just as interesting for the place. Each-way terms on a big American race vary between sites, so check the number of places and the fraction before you bet; our horse racing betting guide explains both, along with the starting price and Rule 4 deductions when a runner is withdrawn late.
- Ante-post or on the day. A price taken now can be bigger, but if he does not run the stake is normally lost. On the day you lose the price risk and keep the certainty that he is in the field.
- Match bets. A head-to-head against Sovereignty is the obvious pairing.
- Forecasts. If you think the race is between the two favourites, a reverse forecast covers both orders.
- Converting prices. American tote odds, fractions and decimals all appear around this race; the odds calculator turns each one into an implied probability you can compare with our 28%.
- Each way. The each-way calculator shows the return on both halves of the bet at any place fraction.
His earlier American runs give extra context. The Kentucky Derby guide covers the race in which he was third in 2024, and the Knightsbridge profile explains the third horse in the rankings.
Where to watch
The Breeders' Cup is shown by national broadcasters in the United States and by racing channels in many other countries, and the Breeders' Cup's official site lists where the races can be seen. Check it for your country closer to race day rather than relying on last year's arrangements.
Some betting sites also stream racing inside a logged-in account, and we have picked out sites that do. Which races they carry, and in which countries, differs from site to site, so treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to choose one.
