The Pacific Classic Winner Who May Run in the Dirt Mile Instead
A Pacific Classic romp earned the Godolphin five-year-old a place in the Breeders' Cup Classic, but his stable plans to run him in the Dirt Mile if Sovereignty goes to post. Here is his breeding, his record, how he races and how to bet on him while the plan is open.
Knightsbridge is the third-ranked horse for the 2026 Breeders' Cup Classic and the one whose race is still undecided. His six-and-a-quarter-length win in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar on 22 August gave him a fees-paid place in the Classic at Keeneland on 31 October. But he shares a trainer, an owner and a jockey with Sovereignty, and Godolphin has said that if Sovereignty runs in the Classic, Knightsbridge goes to the Dirt Mile the same afternoon. For bettors that makes him two different propositions, and the choice depends on another horse's foot.

The table covers eleven of his twelve starts. The remaining one, his fourth career start in 2025, is not described in the sources we used, so we have left it out rather than guess. The totals above include it.
The pattern is clear enough without it. He raced only three times in 2023 and 2024, then won six of eight from November 2025 to August 2026. The two defeats in that run were both at Grade 1 level, one of them over a mile in the Met Mile.
What is known about Knightsbridge
He races on the pace. In the Hooper he duelled with the previously unbeaten Life and Times and wore him down; in the Gulfstream Park Mile he stalked the leader, went clear on the turn and won with his rider sitting still; at Del Mar he raced on or close to the lead, put away Full Serrano at the top of the straight and held off Original Sin, who rallied from last into second.
Distance was the open question before Del Mar. Until July he had never raced around two turns, and the Monmouth Cup at a mile and an eighth was the first time he did. The Pacific Classic was his first try at a mile and a quarter, and a six-and-a-quarter-length margin answered most of the doubts. He started that race at 11–10 favourite.
What is less proven is class against the very top tier. His Grade 1 record is one win, one second and one sixth. At Del Mar he beat Original Sin and Full Serrano; he has never raced against Forever Young, and his only previous run at Keeneland was a third in a Grade 3 two years ago.
Breeders' Cup Classic: chances and why
Our estimate, if he runs in the Classic: a 12% chance of winning, a fair price of about 7–1 (8.00 in decimal). This is our estimate, not a bookmaker price.
- Current form. He won his last two starts by 10¼ and 6¼ lengths, the second of them at the Classic trip.
- Tactical speed. A horse who can sit on the pace avoids traffic, which matters in a big field on a track he has run on before.
- Against him: depth of opposition. He has never met the defending champion, and Magnitude, who beat that champion in Dubai, is another step up from anything he faced at Del Mar.
- Against him: the plan. He runs in the Classic only if Sovereignty is ruled out, so any Classic bet on him carries a real chance of being a non-runner.
- The Dirt Mile alternative. His three graded wins at Gulfstream came at seven furlongs and a mile, including the 11¼-length Gulfstream Park Mile. We will not price that race until the field is known, but on form it looks the more natural target.
How to bet on Knightsbridge
Timing is everything here. Until the final fields are declared, a Classic bet on him is really a bet that Sovereignty misses the race, and an ante-post stake on a horse who goes elsewhere is normally lost. Our racing betting explainer sets out ante-post rules, non-runner terms, the starting price and the Rule 4 deduction that cuts fixed-odds winnings when another runner comes out late.
- Wait for declarations. Once you know which race he is in, the uncertainty is gone and the price reflects only his chance.
- Each way in the Classic. If he does run, a pace-presser with his margins has a fair chance of holding a place; the each-way calculator works out both halves of the return.
- Win in the Dirt Mile. If he drops back in trip, we expect him to be near the top of the market, and a win bet is the straightforward option.
- Compare prices with our numbers. The odds calculator turns any quote into an implied percentage to set against our 12%.
For the two horses at the head of the Classic market, read the profiles of Forever Young and Sovereignty. Whichever of the stable's pair runs in the Classic, the other is likely to be in a different race that day.
Where to watch
Both the Classic and the Dirt Mile are part of the two-day Breeders' Cup World Championships on 30 and 31 October, broadcast in the United States by national networks and abroad by racing channels that buy the rights. The official Breeders' Cup site is the place to confirm who shows it where you live.
Live pictures are also available on some betting sites to logged-in customers, and we have picked out sites where that is available. What is shown varies by site and by country, especially for American racing, so check the schedule before the meeting.
