Final Demand: the Mullins novice who could step up to the 2027 Gold Cup
Final Demand won three Grade 1 races as a novice and was beaten three-quarters of a length in the 2026 Brown Advisory. The early market has him third for the Gold Cup on 19 March 2027, yet he has never raced against established chasers and his target is not confirmed. Here is what the form says.
Final Demand is the youngest of the leading names in the early betting for the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday 19 March 2027, and the least proven. He won three Grade 1 novice races for Willie Mullins and lost the 2026 Brown Advisory by three-quarters of a length. A September market report said he seems likely to be aimed at the Gold Cup. Nothing is confirmed: Mullins has other options for the race, and the novice has yet to meet the best staying chasers.

His sire is also the sire of Inothewayurthinkin, who won the 2025 Gold Cup. That proves nothing about this horse, but it means the stamina question is not a pedigree worry.

Eight starts, five wins, one second and two thirds, on Sporting Life's record. Four came over hurdles (three wins) and four over fences (two wins). He has never finished out of the first three.

The Brown Advisory was run over 3m 1f on good to soft, good in places. Kitzbuhel, an 11/1 shot from the same stable, held him off; Salver was third. His record shows no run since that day.
What is known about Final Demand
He likes to be in front. He made all in the Champion Novice Hurdle and in the Faugheen, and led early in the Leopardstown novice chase. In the Brown Advisory he raced prominently, lost second three out, then came again to challenge on the run-in.
Two Cheltenham runs, two defeats. Third at 6/4 in the Baring Bingham and second at 7/2 in the Brown Advisory. In both he was in the fight late and found one or two too good. Neither run is a bad one, but he has yet to win at the course where the Gold Cup is decided.
His jumping let him down once badly. The 30/100 defeat at Leopardstown in February came after a run of errors: not fluent at the third and fifth, a mistake that cost him the lead, and another slip two out. He was then much better in March.
Ground does not decide his form. He has won on heavy, on soft to heavy, on soft and on yielding.
The trip is the open question. His longest race is 3m 1f. The Gold Cup is about a furlong and a half further, against older, stronger horses, and he has yet to show he stays it.
Cheltenham Gold Cup 2027: chances and why
Our estimate: about a 6% chance, close to 16/1. This is our estimate, not a bookmaker price, and the biggest part of the gap to the favourite is the risk that he never lines up.
- Class against novices only. Three Grade 1 wins is a strong haul, but every one came against horses of his own age and experience. Gaelic Warrior beat proven Gold Cup horses by eight lengths.
- He may not be the stable's runner. Mullins also has Gaelic Warrior, Kitzbuhel and Fact To File as possible Gold Cup horses, and Townend, who rode him at Cheltenham, won the 2026 race on Gaelic Warrior. Our view: if both run, the champion keeps the stable jockey.
- The Brown Advisory form is close. Three-quarters of a length behind a stablemate is no disgrace, and the race was run at 3m 1f, so he has already raced within about a furlong and a half of the Gold Cup trip.
- Room to improve. With only four chase starts, he has more scope than the established horses ahead of him in the betting.
The early market had him at 16/1, which matches our figure. Our pick: no bet yet. His first run of the winter, and whether it is over three miles, will say more than any price now.

Only with non-runner no bet. A Mullins horse with several festival options is the clearest case for waiting for the concession. How ante-post bets are settled when a horse switches race is explained in our Cheltenham ante-post guide.
Each way at a bigger price. At 16/1 or more, the place part of an each-way bet starts to carry real value if you think he runs his race without beating the favourite. The each way calculator shows what a place-only return pays at a fifth of the odds.
Compare him with the two ahead of him. Our profiles of the reigning champion and the British-trained runner-up explain why we rate both above him for now.
Learn the settlement rules first. Rule 4, starting price and place terms all change what an ante-post winner pays. The horse racing hub covers them in order.
Where to watch
ITV Racing broadcast the 2026 Gold Cup live in Britain. In Ireland and elsewhere, check which national broadcaster or racing channel has the festival this year; full race replays appear after each day's card. A number of the betting sites we recommend let account holders watch racing live once they have funded the account. The meetings shown differ by site and by week, so check that Cheltenham's Friday card is on the schedule well before the race.
