Jango Baie: Nicky Henderson's Gold Cup runner-up and the each-way case for 2027
Jango Baie shared favouritism for the 2026 Gold Cup, finished second, then won the Aintree Bowl four weeks later. He is second in the early betting for 19 March 2027, though no plan for him has been confirmed. This profile covers his breeding, all thirteen starts and how we would bet him.
Jango Baie is the main British-trained hope for the 2027 Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday 19 March. He went off joint favourite last March, ran second to Gaelic Warrior, and then won the Bowl at Aintree at even money. The early market made him second favourite in September. No plan for his season has been published, so his run in the Gold Cup is expected rather than confirmed, and if he goes back to the King George at Kempton, that race will tell us most.

The only time he has finished outside the first three was the King George, and even there he had every chance two out.
What is known about Jango Baie
He stays. The Gold Cup trip of about three miles and a quarter is the furthest he has raced, and he was still going forward at the end of it: the race comment has him staying on up the run-in after going second approaching the last. In the Arkle he was outpaced three out and still got up near the line. His best form has come as the distances got longer.
Cheltenham suits him. Three visits have brought a novice chase win, the Arkle and second in the Gold Cup. Only Gaelic Warrior has beaten him at the course.
The jumping is his weak point. Almost every chase comment lists an error. He made two mistakes in the closing stages of the Arkle, hit the third-last in the Gold Cup, and was not fluent early at Aintree in April before hitting the twelfth. He has not fallen, but small errors cost ground, and against a horse of the winner's class there is little to spare.
He gets beaten narrowly. A short head in the Scilly Isles, half a length at Kelso, a short head off second in the Manifesto, a close fourth in the King George. Those are defeats that a better round of jumping could reverse.
Ground. He has won on soft, good to soft and good, and ran second on heavy at Sandown. Nothing in his form says he needs one type of going.
Cheltenham Gold Cup 2027: chances and why
Our estimate: about a 12% chance, or roughly 7/1. That is our estimate, not a bookmaker price, and it builds in the risk of him missing the race.
- The gap to the winner is real. Eight lengths at Cheltenham is a lot to make up. Gaelic Warrior was rated 176 going into Punchestown; Jango Baie was 167 going into Aintree.
- He is the right age to close it. He is a year younger and his rating has gone up every season, from novice hurdler to Grade 1 chaser.
- The trip is now proven. Last March was his first run beyond three miles, and he saw it out.
- The jumping caps the upside. Until he gets round a big race without a significant error, we would not put him much shorter than our figure.
The September market had him at 8/1. Our 7/1 makes that a small edge, but not one we would take without the non-runner concession while his target is unannounced. Our view: he is the stronger each-way bet than the favourite is a win bet.

Each way. This is where his profile fits best. A horse who has made the frame in twelve of thirteen starts is the type the place part of the bet rewards. Check what the place terms return on your stake with the each-way returns calculator before committing.
Win with non-runner no bet. Wait until the concession is offered on the Gold Cup. The way ante-post settlement works, and when bookmakers usually switch to those terms, is covered in the festival betting guide.
Betting without the favourite. If you think Gaelic Warrior wins again, a bet on the runner-up in the market without him is a straight bet on Jango Baie beating the rest. Our Gaelic Warrior profile sets out why we have the champion first.
Watch the King George. He was fourth at Kempton last season. A win there in December would shorten him for March; another narrow defeat may leave the price alone. The other leading contender we cover, Final Demand, will come through Irish trials instead. For place terms, starting price and Rule 4, see the racing betting basics.
Where to watch
The 2026 Gold Cup went out live on ITV Racing in Britain. Viewers in other countries depend on whichever national broadcaster or racing channel holds the Cheltenham rights there, and replays of each race are published after the meeting. Some of the betting sites in our list show live racing inside a funded account. Coverage is decided meeting by meeting and is not the same on every site, so confirm Gold Cup day is included before you plan around it.
