Gaelic Warrior: the reigning Gold Cup winner and his case for March 2027
Willie Mullins' bay gelding won the 2026 Cheltenham Gold Cup by eight lengths and the Punchestown Gold Cup by twenty-six. He heads the early market for 19 March 2027, but his run is not yet confirmed. Here is his pedigree, his full big-race record and our own estimate of his chance.

Gaelic Warrior is the horse the rest of the staying chasers have to beat. He won the 2026 Cheltenham Gold Cup by eight lengths as the 11/4 joint favourite, then took the Punchestown Gold Cup in late April by twenty-six lengths. The next Gold Cup is on Friday 19 March 2027, and the early lists have him at the top of the betting. His run there is not yet confirmed: the race is more than five months away, and no programme for his winter has been announced in anything we read.

He was the only Mullins runner in last season's Gold Cup. That matters for 2027 because the stable holds several possible contenders, and the jockey question is not settled. Townend was due to ride Galopin Des Champs, the 2023 and 2024 winner, until that horse was ruled out through injury, and only then took the ride that won.
Record
Sporting Life's form record shows 23 starts: 12 wins, 5 seconds and 4 thirds. Nine of those runs were over hurdles and fourteen over fences. His first three starts came over hurdles at Auteuil in 2021. The table covers the runs that shape the betting now.

The Gold Cup was run on good to soft, soft in places, in 6m 39.02s. Jango Baie, the other joint favourite, was second and the 2025 winner Inothewayurthinkin third. The first prize was £351,688.

What is known about Gaelic Warrior
He wins over almost any trip. His Grade 1 wins run from the Arkle, just under two miles, to the Gold Cup at about three and a quarter. In our view that range keeps the Ryanair and the King George open as alternatives for connections.
Ground is not a worry. He has won on heavy at Limerick, on soft to heavy in the John Durkan, on good at Sandown and on good to soft at Cheltenham.
He can be keen. The comments in running use the phrase “took keen hold” more than once, including in the Gold Cup itself, and his trainer said as much after the race. Townend said he pulled a little early but was well behaved, and that he jumped really well.
He has a habit of jumping right. The race comments note it in the Fred Winter, the Dublin Chase and the 2025 Aintree Bowl, and he unseated at the last in a Leopardstown novice chase in 2024. It did not show at Cheltenham last March.
The festival suits him. Four runs at the meeting have produced two seconds and two wins. He has never finished outside the first two there.
He has been beaten at short prices. He was second at 1/3 at Punchestown in 2024, and he lost twice in midwinter last season before his March peak. A defeat in December or February would not change our view on its own.
Cheltenham Gold Cup 2027: chances and why
Our estimate: a 28% chance of winning, which works out at about 5/2. This is our estimate, not a bookmaker price, and it includes the risk that he does not run.
Why we have him first:
- The margins. Eight lengths at Cheltenham and twenty-six at Punchestown are not the wins of a horse who was lucky on the day.
- Course record. Two wins and two seconds from four festival runs.
- Versatility. He handles every ground and every trip in the division, so a wet or a dry March does not hurt him.
Why we do not have him shorter:
- Younger rivals. Kitzbuhel and Final Demand, first and second in last season's Brown Advisory, come from the same yard and step up from novice company. Jango Baie, eight lengths behind in March, won the Aintree Bowl four weeks later.
- Galopin Des Champs. The two-time winner missed the 2026 race through injury. If he returns, the stable has a choice to make, and so may the jockey.
- Five months is a long time. A setback at any point in the winter makes an ante-post bet without the non-runner concession a loser.
An early market report on 9 September listed him at 9/4. Our 5/2 says that price is fair, not generous. Our pick: wait for non-runner no bet rather than take 9/4 now.

Win, ante-post. The price may drift if he loses again in December, as he did last season, and that is the time to look. The settlement rules, and why non-runner no bet matters more at Cheltenham than at most meetings, are set out in our Cheltenham Festival guide.
Each way. At around 9/4 the place part of an each-way bet pays a fifth of very little. Run the numbers in the each way calculator before you split the stake, and you will see why each way belongs on the bigger-priced horses in this race.

In Britain, the 2026 Gold Cup was shown live on ITV Racing. In Ireland and other countries, national broadcasters and dedicated racing channels hold the rights, and the racecourse publishes replays afterwards. Is Gaelic Warrior running in the 2027 Cheltenham Gold Cup?
Not confirmed. He is the obvious target horse for the race after winning it in 2026, but final declarations are made 48 hours before the race, and no source we read sets out his programme for this winter.
Who trains and rides him?
He is trained by Willie Mullins at Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow, and owned by Rich and Susannah Ricci. Paul Townend rode him to both of his 2026 Gold Cup wins; Patrick Mullins has ridden him in several Grade 1s.
What is his record?
Sporting Life lists 23 starts, 12 wins, 5 seconds and 4 thirds. At the Cheltenham Festival he has run four times: second twice over hurdles, then wins in the 2024 Arkle and the 2026 Gold Cup.
What price is he for the 2027 Gold Cup?
An early market report on 9 September 2026 listed him as the 9/4 favourite. Our own estimate is a 28% chance, about 5/2. That is our opinion, not a bookmaker price, and prices will move through the winter.
Is he worth backing each way?
At a price this short the place part returns very little. Each way makes more sense on bigger-priced rivals; for him, a win bet with non-runner no bet is the cleaner option once it is offered.
