Melbourne Cup 2026: Betting the Race That Stops a Nation

The 2026 Melbourne Cup is run on Tuesday 3 November at Flemington: 3200 metres, a handicap, and a field capped at 24. Here is how the race works for a bettor, from the weights and the barrier draw to the overseas raiders and the lead-up races that shape the market.

Australians call it the race that stops a nation, and on the first Tuesday in November that is close to literal. Offices run sweeps, metropolitan Melbourne has a public holiday, and people who never look at a form guide want a horse. The 2026 race is on Tuesday 3 November at Flemington. Melbourne Cup odds are shaped by three things a casual punter rarely checks: the weights, the barrier draw and where each horse had its last run. This page goes through all three.

The race: date, distance and field

The Melbourne Cup is a Group 1 handicap over 3200 metres on the turf at Flemington, run by the Victoria Racing Club. It was first run in 1861, and the VRC lists it as an open handicap in which apprentices cannot claim their usual weight allowance.

The field is capped at 24 for safety. If more horses are accepted, a ballot decides who runs, using prize money won over the previous two years, wins or placings in certain lead-up races and the weight each horse has been given. The prize money was raised to A$10 million for 2025, and the VRC now pays $100,000 to every horse from 13th to 24th, so connections have a reason to start even a horse with a modest chance. For a bettor that means a full field almost every year.

What time is the Melbourne Cup in the UK, NZ and Australia?

The Cup is traditionally off at 3pm Melbourne time, which on 3 November is Australian Eastern Daylight Time. The VRC confirms the exact time with the race-day programme; in 2026 the card runs from a first race at 10.45am to a last at 5.15pm.

UK (GMT)4am Tuesday

British clocks go back at the end of October, so the race falls at 4am in the UK rather than 5am. Anyone in Britain who wants to bet at the latest Melbourne Cup odds has to be awake for it or place the bet the evening before. In New Zealand the Cup lands at the end of the working day, so most punters there can watch it live.

How the handicap shapes Melbourne Cup odds

The Melbourne Cup is a handicap. Each horse is given a weight to carry, based on its record, and the jockey's weight is made up to that figure with lead in the saddle cloth. The better and older horses carry more, the lighter-raced and younger ones less. The aim is a race in which every horse has a chance in theory.

In practice the weight matters over 3200 metres more than over a sprint trip. A couple of kilograms either way is small at the start and large over the last 400 metres. The 2025 winner, Half Yours, carried 53 kg. That is the most useful single thing to know about him as a guide: he was well treated by the handicapper, and he had shown his form at the right time.

Melbourne Cup odds move most at two moments: when the weights are published and when the field is final. A horse that looks badly treated on weight drifts; one that gets in light after a good run shortens. If you are betting early, you are betting on the weights more than on the horse.

The barrier draw

With 24 runners, the barrier matters. A horse drawn wide has to use energy to find a position or settle at the back and hope for luck later. One drawn close to the rail can save ground the whole way, but can also get trapped behind horses when the race opens up. The draw is made once the final field is known, and Melbourne Cup odds react straight away.

For a bettor the practical point is timing. If you take a price before the draw, you take on the draw risk too. Some punters wait for the barriers, accept a shorter price on a horse that has drawn well and avoid the ones that have drawn badly.

Lead-up races: where the form comes from

The spring programme in Melbourne is built around the Cup. The VRC's Golden Ticket races give the winner a ballot exemption for the Cup, which makes them the clearest guide to who will run. For 2026 these are:

  • Caulfield Cup, 2400 metres, Saturday 17 October. Winning it and the Melbourne Cup in the same spring is the Cups double, which Half Yours completed in 2025.
  • Geelong Cup, 2400 metres, Wednesday 21 October.
  • Moonee Valley Gold Cup and Cox Plate, both on Saturday 24 October. In 2026, for the first time, the Cox Plate is run at Flemington, because Moonee Valley is closed for redevelopment.
  • Bart Cummings, 2500 metres, already run on 3 October and won by Mr Monaco.
  • Earlier tickets went to Whisky On The Hill, Zakouma, Tawny Port, Daiquiri Bay, Defiantly and Shockletz, from races in Australia, the United States, England and France.

The Cox Plate move matters for one reason. A horse that runs well at Flemington ten days before the Cup has now raced on the same track. That has not been possible before, and it may change how the result is read.

Overseas horses and quarantine

Foreign horses have been part of the Cup since Vintage Crop became the first Northern Hemisphere-trained winner in 1993. Every horse except those from New Zealand must spend at least 14 days in approved quarantine in its home country and then go into the Werribee International Horse Centre on arrival.

Since 2021 the veterinary rules have been stricter. Overseas horses need CT or MRI scans of the lower limbs before they travel and again before each start in Australia, and local horses need one scan before the Cup. At least ten horses have been scratched on scan findings since then. For Melbourne Cup odds this is a real risk: an ante-post bet on an overseas horse can be lost at the vet stage, long after the price was taken.

Each-way and places in a field of 24

A 24-runner handicap is where each-way betting earns its keep. The win half needs one horse to beat 23 others; the place half needs it to be in the frame. For a horse at long Melbourne Cup odds that you think will run well rather than win, the place half is often the better part of the bet.

The terms vary. Australian place betting and British each-way terms are set differently, and the number of places and the fraction of the odds differ from site to site. Under standard UK terms a handicap with more than 15 runners pays four places at a quarter of the odds. Our each-way calculator shows what both halves return at any price and fraction.

Three habits help on Cup day:

  • Compare place terms before the win price. One extra place is often worth more than a few cents on the odds.
  • Wait for the barriers if the draw worries you. You give up a little price for a known starting position.
  • Price in late scratchings. With 24 runners and strict vet checks, a horse can come out on the morning of the race.

Our view of the 2026 Melbourne Cup

This is our view in early October, not a forecast. The final field and the weights are not settled, and Melbourne Cup odds this early carry the risk that a horse does not make the race. We name only horses that have already earned a ballot exemption.

  • Mr Monaco won the Bart Cummings on 3 October, the latest Golden Ticket race. Our view: the most recent form among the exempt horses, worth following into the Cup.
  • Shockletz won the Archer Stakes in September. Our view: an exemption earned at home, without the travel and quarantine that complicate the overseas runners.
  • The Caulfield Cup winner, whoever it is on 17 October, will be the obvious horse. Our view: Half Yours showed in 2025 that the double is a live trend, but the price will reflect it.

Our pick at this stage: none. We would rather wait for the weights, the Caulfield Cup and the barrier draw before naming a horse. If you want an expected price now, treat any figure as an estimate that will change after each of those three steps.

The office sweep and the casual bet

Most people who bet on the Cup do it once a year, through a sweep. Each entry draws a horse at random, and the pot goes to the holders of the first three or so. A sweep has no odds at all: every ticket has the same price whatever horse it draws. That is the opposite of the betting market, where Melbourne Cup odds reflect what the money thinks of each horse.

If you want to turn a sweep horse into a proper bet, look at its price first. A horse at long odds in a 24-runner handicap is still worth an each-way look, but the price should be the reason, not the draw from the hat.

Where to watch the Melbourne Cup

In Australia the Cup is shown by the broadcasters that hold the Spring Carnival rights, and the VRC carries news and replays on its own channels. In New Zealand and the UK, coverage depends on the racing broadcasters in each country. Several betting sites also show live race pictures to signed-in players, and a number of the sites we list do this for Australian racing, though the meetings carried are not the same everywhere, so check the racing section before the day.

Streams are shown to signed-in accounts on selected events, and the list differs between betting sites and between matches. 18+.

What time does the Melbourne Cup start in the UK and New Zealand?
The race is traditionally run at 3pm Melbourne time (AEDT). That is 4am GMT in the UK, where the clocks have gone back by then, and 5pm in New Zealand. Check the final race-day programme, as the exact time is confirmed closer to the day.
How many horses run in the Melbourne Cup?
A maximum of 24. When more horses are accepted, a ballot decides who gets in, based on prize money, results in certain lead-up races and the weight allotted. Winners of the VRC's Golden Ticket races are exempt from the ballot.
Who won the 2025 Melbourne Cup?
Half Yours, ridden by Jamie Melham and trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, at a starting price of $8 with 53 kg. He had already won the Caulfield Cup, so it was the Cups double. Goodie Two Shoes was second and Middle Earth third.
Is each-way a good bet on the Melbourne Cup?
With 24 runners it is the natural bet on a horse you rate at a long price. How many places are paid, and at what fraction of the odds, depends on the site and the market, so compare the terms before you choose where to bet.
