William Hill Sports Betting: Licence, Markets and When It Asks for ID

William Hill runs two separate sportsbooks under one name: a Gibraltar company licensed for Great Britain, and a Nevada operation with its own account rules. We read what each one publishes and the regulator's register, and mark what stayed closed.

William Hill sports betting means two different things depending on where you stand. In Great Britain it is an online sportsbook run from Gibraltar under a Gambling Commission licence. In Nevada it is a chain of race and sportsbooks with a mobile app, governed by its own account rules. Both publish under the William Hill name, and on 5 October 2026 only one of them let us read its rules.

The British site and its help centre were closed to us that day: the main domains redirected our Netherlands reading point to a notice on a help platform, and the help centre answered with a browser challenge we do not try to pass. The Nevada site, williamhill.us, opened normally, and its Terms of Service and Account Wagering Rules are quoted below by section heading, since neither document numbers its clauses. Both carry the line “last updated: January 28, 2016”.

Who owns William Hill and which licences it holds

William Hill now belongs to evoke plc, the group behind 888. evoke's brand page says William Hill was founded in the UK in 1934, has more than 1,000 high-street shops, expanded online in 1998, and counts the UK, Spain and Italy as its core markets.

The Gambling Commission register splits the business in two. The shops sit with William Hill Organization Limited, account 2752, which has no domain attached. Online betting sits with WHG (International) Limited, account 39225, trading as William Hill Online, linked to www.williamhill.com, with a head office at Suite 601/701 Europort, Europort Road, Gibraltar. Its remote licence, 039225-R-319373-015, covers:

General Betting Standard, Virtual Event1 November 2014
Pool Betting1 November 2014
Casino and Bingo1 November 2014
Gambling Software25 March 2015

The app listing, written by WHG (International), adds that the company is further licensed by the Gibraltar Gambling Commission.

In Nevada, the account rules name the licensees trading as William Hill: William Hill Nevada I, William Hill Nevada II and Brandywine Bookmaking LLC. The site footer gives the holding company as William Hill US Holdco Inc.

The British register holds one recent sanction, and it bears directly on identity checks. On 7 August 2025 the Commission imposed a £82,687 financial penalty on WHG (International) Limited for breaching paragraph 3 of social responsibility code provision 3.9.1, headed “Identification of individual customers – remote”. The provision requires a group to treat a customer's accounts across its companies as one when it identifies that customer. The register notes that William Hill found the breach itself, reported it and cooperated throughout.

The sportsbook William Hill describes

The UK app listing for William Hill sports betting leads with football, horse racing and tennis. It names the Premier League, Scottish Premiership, Champions League, LaLiga and the Nations League, and racing from the Cheltenham Festival, Royal Ascot and the Grand National to Goodwood and Galway. Rugby union and league, boxing, darts, UFC, Formula 1, snooker, the NFL, cricket, golf and greyhounds are also listed, along with politics and reality TV.

It describes four tools worth knowing about:

  • live streaming of horse racing, with selected live sport and in-play markets in the app
  • a Bet Builder hub with leg-by-leg tracking and player-stat markets
  • cash out, which the listing says is available across all sports
  • football statistics shown alongside the odds, including past results and head-to-head records

In Nevada, in-play betting is available at select sportsbook locations and through the William Hill Nevada app, according to williamhill.us. Our guides explain how cash out offers are priced, how same-match bet builders work, and why in-play prices move as they do.

Deposits and withdrawals

For William Hill sports betting in Britain, the terms we could read do not say. The app listing names no payment methods, and the cashier pages did not open.

The Nevada rules are specific. Under “Depositing Funds”, deposits are made in person at select William Hill locations or by approved electronic transfer, and the minimum to open an account is $5. The funding page adds cash deposits at William Hill sportsbooks, sports betting kiosks and Mobile Sports Deposit Hot Spots around the state, and a William Hill Priority prepaid card for topping up from a phone. Under “Withdrawing Funds”, a customer may withdraw up to the account balance at any time, but only at select William Hill locations or by mail. Withdrawals of $10,000 or more may require five days' advance notice, and William Hill may pay by cheque mailed to the registered address. The minimum stake per transaction is $2.

Nothing in those rules resembles a crypto cashier; for coin payouts see our crypto betting sites page, and for processing times across sportsbooks the fast withdrawal page.

When William Hill asks for documents

In Nevada the answer is unambiguous: before you can bet at all. The Terms of Service section “Opening a William Hill Remote Wagering Account” says you complete an application and present it in person at an approved William Hill location, “along with valid picture ID” and a Social Security card. Only once William Hill verifies the application, and you open and fund the account, can you place bets. The Account Wagering Rules, under “Opening an Account”, say the same in other words: a clear copy of a valid driving licence, government ID or check cashing card with picture.

Checks do not stop there. Under “Withdrawing Funds”, William Hill keeps the right to request proper identification or verification of information before allowing any withdrawal. The section “Verification of your identity; accurate information” lets it suspend or close an account if it suspects the details given are untrue or out of date. The app must read your phone's GPS location, and bets count only from inside Nevada. An account also lapses for wagering after a year unless you bet at least once a year or renew it in person.

The minimum age is 21 in Nevada, set out under “Age Requirements”. For British customers, the app listing calls it a real-money gambling app for over-18s, but the verification article and the terms that would say when documents are requested did not open, so for William Hill sports betting in the UK we cannot give that point or a clause.

Who William Hill suits, and who it does not

On the record, William Hill sports betting suits a British bettor who wants racing streams, cash out on every sport and a long-established, licensed bookmaker, and accepts identity checks as part of that. In Nevada it suits someone who lives near a William Hill counter, since opening the account, withdrawing and closing it all happen in person or by post. Racing and football markets more broadly are on our horse racing hub and NFL hub.

It does not suit anyone hoping to bet before showing documents: the Nevada rules require ID and a Social Security card before the first wager. The William Hill app lists time reminders, time-outs and deposit limits; our responsible gambling page covers how to use them.

We read bet365 and Paddy Power the same way.

Betting without handing over ID first

If presenting a passport before a first bet rules a sportsbook out, the alternative is a site that opens with an email address and states in numbered clauses when it might still ask. Our no verification betting sites ranking reads those clauses for each operator. The sites we have read so far:

The Terms of Service say you present an account application in person with valid picture ID and a Social Security card, and the Account Wagering Rules reserve the right to ask for identification again before any withdrawal. The UK site's verification pages did not open for us, so we cannot quote the British rule.

WHG (International) Limited, a company registered in Gibraltar, holds Gambling Commission account 39225, with remote betting licences for real and virtual events active since 1 November 2014. The app listing adds that it is also licensed by the Gibraltar Gambling Commission. The shops are licensed separately to William Hill Organization Limited, account 2752.
How long do William Hill withdrawals take?
For the UK site, the terms we could read do not say. For Nevada accounts, the Account Wagering Rules set out that withdrawals are made at select locations or by mail, that $10,000 or more may need five days' advance notice, and that William Hill may pay by cheque.
How old do you have to be to bet with William Hill?
The UK app listing describes it as a real-money gambling app for over-18s. The Nevada terms set the minimum at 21.
Was William Hill fined by the Gambling Commission?
Yes. On 7 August 2025 the Commission imposed a £82,687 financial penalty on WHG (International) Limited for breaching a code provision on identifying individual customers who hold accounts across group companies. The register notes the company found and reported the breach itself.
