Naoya Inoue: The Pound-for-Pound Number One and His Next Opponent
Naoya Inoue is unbeaten in 33 fights, holds all four major super bantamweight belts and is rated the best boxer in the world, pound for pound. His next fight is being lined up for early 2027, with Jesse Rodriguez the name most often linked. Here is what the record says about the prices.
Naoya Inoue is the undisputed super bantamweight champion and, since May 2026, the number one pound-for-pound boxer for The Ring, ESPN, the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and BoxRec alike. He beat Junto Nakatani on points in front of 55,000 people at the Tokyo Dome on 2 May, and his promoter has pointed to February 2027 for the next one. When a fighter is this short in the betting, the value is rarely in who wins. It is in how and when.

Read the top three rows together. After 27 knockouts in his first 30 fights, Inoue has gone the full twelve rounds three times in a row, and the Picasso fight was the first time in his career he had won back-to-back fights on points. The opposition has got better, and the opponents have learned to survive.
What is known about Naoya Inoue
Speed, footwork and body punching. Against Akhmadaliev he outmanoeuvred a former unified champion and kept going to the body; against Picasso he landed 328 of 790 punches (41.5%), 96 of them to the body, according to CompuBox. The Doheny fight in 2024 ended with a body shot in round seven.
The power is real across weight classes: he set a record with 23 knockout wins in world title fights, passing Joe Louis, after the Cardenas stoppage. Nakatani, the best opponent of his recent run, finished the fight with a fractured left eye socket from an uppercut in round eleven.
The flaw, if there is one, is a recent habit of being caught early. Nery dropped him in the first round in 2024 and Cardenas in the second in 2025, the only two knockdowns of his professional career. He won both fights inside the distance, which says as much about his recovery as about the risk.
Early 2027: chances and why
Nothing is signed. Promoter Hideyuki Ohashi said in June that Inoue was being lined up for a major fight in February 2027, strongly suggesting Jesse Rodriguez; Turki Alalshikh had spoken in May of January 2027 in Japan. A Fight Sports report in August named the Mizuho PayPay Dome in Fukuoka as the target venue and said Inoue intends to move up to featherweight after this fight. Rodriguez won the WBA bantamweight title by sixth-round knockout of Antonio Vargas on 13 June, and his camp has suggested he might take another fight before moving up again. Treat every price on this fight as a price on an event that may not happen in that form.
If it is Rodriguez, our estimate, not a bookmaker price: Inoue 64%, a fair price of about 1.56; Rodriguez 34%, about 2.95; the draw 2%. Against any other contender in the top ten we would put Inoue nearer 80%.
The reasons:
- Size. Rodriguez would be fighting above bantamweight against a man who has held all four super bantamweight belts since 2023.
- Recent form against the best. Inoue beat an unbeaten Nakatani clearly on two cards and narrowly on the third.
- Rodriguez is also unbeaten and rated in the pound-for-pound top ten. He is a three-weight champion with real power, which keeps our number well short of a formality.
- Three decisions in a row. If the knockouts are fading against elite opponents, the gap between them narrows on the cards.

Each market is explained on the boxing hub. For Inoue the useful ones are these:
- Winner. At the prices he usually carries, a straight bet returns little. It is more useful as one leg of a double.
- Method of victory. The most interesting market for him right now. A record built on knockouts says stoppage; his last three fights say decision. Our view: against Rodriguez, slightly more likely to go the distance than not.
- Round betting. If you expect a stoppage, his record points to the second half. Tapales went in round ten, Butler in eleven, Cardenas in eight. Grouped bands such as seven to nine or ten to twelve suit that pattern better than single rounds.
- Total rounds. The over has won in each of his last three fights.
- The draw. Priced long and rarely seen at this level, but it decides how a two-way moneyline is settled, so read the rule before you bet.
Where to watch
His recent fights in Japan streamed on Lemino, with the Nakatani fight sold as pay-per-view there; outside Japan the promoters' broadcast partners carry his cards, and the rights holder depends on the country. A number of the betting sites we picked show boxing inside the logged-in account, more often undercards and smaller shows than a headline event like this, and the selection varies by site and by week.
The rest of this series covers Daniel Dubois at heavyweight and David Benavidez, and if you are choosing where to bet, start with the best odds betting sites.
