BBL|16 starts in Chennai: how to bet the Big Bash this summer
The sixteenth Big Bash League opens on 12 December 2026 with the first BBL game ever played outside Australia. Eight teams, 44 games and a new designated batter rule change how the matches should be priced. Here is the schedule, what is new, how the main markets work and our view on the title.
The Big Bash is the only major T20 league played through the Australian summer holidays, and this season it starts somewhere it has never been. BBL|16 opens in Chennai on 12 December 2026, then moves to Australia for six weeks of night cricket ending on 26 January 2027. For big bash betting that means a short, dense season with a new rule nobody has prices for yet.

BBL|16: dates, teams, format and champions
Cricket Australia released the full 44-game schedule in July. The opener is Melbourne Renegades against the reigning champions Perth Scorchers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the first Big Bash game staged outside Australia. It is played straight after the fourth day of the first Trans-Tasman Trophy Test. Australia's own opening night follows three days later, with Brisbane Heat against Sydney Sixers at the Gabba.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Season | 16th edition, 2026–27 |
| First game | 12 December 2026, Renegades v Scorchers, Chennai |
| Opening night in Australia | 15 December 2026, Heat v Sixers, the Gabba |
| Games | 44: 40 in the regular season, four finals |
| Finals start | Qualifier, Tuesday 19 January 2027 |
| Final | 26 January 2027, with a reserve day |
| Defending champions | Perth Scorchers |
The eight teams are unchanged:
- Adelaide Strikers
- Brisbane Heat
- Hobart Hurricanes
- Melbourne Renegades
- Melbourne Stars
- Perth Scorchers
- Sydney Sixers
- Sydney Thunder
Forty regular-season games across eight teams works out at ten games each. The top four go through to a four-game finals series that Cricket Australia has kept as it was, beginning with the Qualifier and passing through the Challenger before the Final. This season there is an extra day's rest between the Challenger and the Final.
The Scorchers hold the title. In the BBL|15 Final at Optus Stadium on 25 January 2026 they bowled the Sixers out for 132 and reached 133 for four with 15 balls to spare. It was their sixth Big Bash title, the most of any club in the competition's history.
What makes Big Bash betting different
A Big Bash game looks like any other T20 on the scorecard. The details that move prices are the grounds, the rules the league has added and the players who come and go during the summer.
Grounds across the country, and one in India
The fixture uses grounds including the MCG, Junction Oval, the SCG, Engie Stadium, the Gabba, Adelaide Oval and Optus Stadium, and regional fixtures at Manuka Oval in Canberra and in Launceston. Fixed points in the calendar include Renegades against Hurricanes at Junction Oval on Christmas Eve and Strikers against Stars at Adelaide Oval on New Year's Eve. Grounds differ in size and surface, so a runs line that suits one venue can be wrong by a distance at the next. The Chennai opener is the outlier: conditions there have little in common with an Australian pitch, and we would treat any totals line for that game with caution.
The designated batter and fielder rule
This is the change that matters most this season. Before the bat flip, a club can name one player from its XI as a designated batter, who bats but cannot field or bowl. A club that does so must also name a designated fielder, who can field or keep wicket but cannot bowl. The two swap at the change of innings. The rule is optional, applies to the men's league only, and is used for the first time in Chennai.
In practice a team can carry an extra specialist batter without losing a bowling option. Cricket.com.au points out that the BBL produced 37 totals of 200 or more across 372 innings in the past four seasons, while the IPL, with its impact player rule, had 65 such totals in 74 games in 2026 alone. Nobody knows yet how far the Big Bash will move towards that number, and early-season prices will be partly guesswork.
Power Surge and the bat flip
The Power Surge is the one rule from the BBL|10 package still in use. The opening powerplay lasts four overs, and the batting side holds back two overs it can call at the start of any over from the 11th, with only two fielders allowed outside the inner circle. Those two overs often come late, which shifts scoring towards the back half of an innings. The bat flip replaces the coin toss, and because the designated batter is named before it, the team sheet you see after the flip is the one that matters.
Overseas players and international calls
The overseas draft has been scrapped for BBL|16. Clubs now sign players directly on the open market, as they did before 2022, with a maximum of three overseas players on a primary list and no minimum. Australia's Test programme runs alongside the league, so national players move in and out. Outright and match prices react quickly when a big name joins or leaves a squad, and that is often where value appears.
Big Bash odds: the main markets
Most sites price the same core markets for every BBL game, and big bash betting rewards knowing which of them the new rule affects. These are the ones we think repay some homework.
- Match winner. A two-way market. Teams fly long distances between games, and this season the designated batter can strengthen one side's line-up in a way last season's form will not show.
- Top batter. Check the team sheet after the bat flip. A player named as designated batter is a pure batter for that game, and a side using the rule may move an extra specialist up the order. If two players tie as top scorer, dead-heat rules usually split the stake.
- Sixes. Match sixes and team sixes depend heavily on boundary size. The Power Surge gives two extra overs of attacking field settings late in the innings, which is when hitters are set.
- Totals. Innings runs and match runs are where the new rule should show first. If lines open at last season's levels, the over deserves a closer look in games where both sides name a designated batter.
Our view on totals: we expect bookmakers to adjust lines upwards over the first two weeks rather than in the first round. That is an opinion, not a measured trend, and a run of low scores in December would prove us wrong.
BBL|16 title outright: our view
Everything in this section is our opinion. Outright big bash betting ties up a stake for six weeks, so the price has to be worth the wait. It is not a quote from any betting site.
The Scorchers start as champions with six titles and a squad that beat last season's runners-up comfortably in the Final. The Sixers lost that Final and were the other side in the top two. A strong team is usually priced as a clear favourite in the outright market, and in an eight-team league with four finals places the price can get very short.
Our pick: the Scorchers to reach the top four rather than to win the title outright. Four of eight teams qualify for the finals, and a team of their record should be well above that average. As an expected price, we estimate a fair figure for the Scorchers to win BBL|16 at around 4.00. If the price offered is shorter, the outright bet has less value than the finals market. Our big bash predictions for individual games will lean on team sheets after the bat flip rather than on reputations.

Where to watch the Big Bash
In Australia, Cricket Australia names Fox Cricket and Kayo Sports on Foxtel alongside Seven and 7plus as the season's broadcasters. Outside Australia, coverage comes from national broadcasters that hold rights in each country, and the league's own channels carry highlights and news.
Some betting sites also show a share of games inside a logged-in account. We have picked out sites that offer this, but the range of matches varies from one site to the next, so check what a site carries before you rely on it for live big bash betting on a particular game.
More cricket and Australian sport
Big Bash betting sits inside a wider cricket calendar. Our cricket guide covers formats, rain rules and the toss. The IPL page explains the league whose impact player rule the BBL is now borrowing from. For winter sport in Australia, see AFL betting, and for every other sport we cover, start at the sports hub.
