Form and the domestic tables

Roma went into the international break first in Serie A on 13 points from five games, ahead of champions Inter on goal difference, and only three goals conceded. Gian Piero Gasperini's side scored four against Fiorentina and four at Lecce, then needed stoppage-time goals to beat Atalanta. Donyell Malen scored six of the 14 league goals.

Real Madrid are fourth in La Liga on 15 points from seven, behind a Barcelona side with seven wins from seven and an Atlético side on 16. Madrid have scored freely, 18 league goals, but lost two of their last five, both away from home in the league.

Madrid have not conceded to Roma in four games and won both recent visits to the Olimpico 2–0. Roma's best memory is 2008, when they won both legs 2–1 and went through. We give the record little weight: the most recent meeting was almost eight years ago, and both squads have turned over since. The one link is Mourinho himself, and he knows the Olimpico crowd better than anyone in the away party.

Team news: confirmed absences only

Real Madrid. Centre-back is the problem. Raúl Asencio had surgery on 1 October for a stress fracture of the right tibia and could be out for up to four months. Ibrahima Konaté damaged a lateral ligament in his right leg on international duty; a report on 4 October put his absence at up to three weeks, which would cover this match. Éder Militão was still completing his recovery at the start of the month. Dean Huijsen was sent off in the league derby with Atlético on 20 September, a domestic ban, so he is the most likely partner for Rüdiger here. Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde picked up knocks during the break; Goal reported on 27 September that neither looked serious. Mbappé's goal against Inter took him to 71 in the competition, level with Raúl.

Roma. Cristante, the captain, has a knee problem. Reports on 3 and 5 October said he would miss Como and that his chances of facing Madrid were slim. Marten de Roon or Niccolò Pisilli are the expected cover beside Manu Koné. Malen left the Inter game with a knee issue but was cleared for the Como trip, so he should lead the line.

Back-up: Real Madrid or draw (double chance), around 1.45 (our estimate).
