What Four Selections Return in a Lucky 15
Enter four prices and four results and the Lucky 15 calculator returns the total stake, the return and the profit. It opens in fractional odds, each way at a quarter of the odds, and handles places, non-runners and dead heats.
A Lucky 15 turns four selections into fifteen bets, and each way into thirty. Working out what came back by hand means fifteen or thirty multiplications, half of them at a quarter of the odds. This Lucky 15 calculator does it as you type the results, so you can check a slip before it goes on and confirm what a settled one should have paid.

How to use the Lucky 15 calculator
- Type the four prices. The page opens in fractional odds because that is how most racing is priced in Britain and Ireland. Decimal and American work too, and switching converts the prices already entered.
- Set the stake. Choose whether the figure is per bet or for the whole slip. 50p per bet each way and a total of £15 are the same slip.
- Check the place terms. Each way at 1/4 odds is preset. Change it to 1/5 or another fraction if the race pays differently.
- Pick a result for each selection: won, placed, lost, void, or a dead heat of 2 or 3.
The number of bets, the total stake, the return and the profit update with every change.
What is inside a Lucky 15
Four selections can be combined in fifteen ways, and a Lucky 15 backs every one of them.
| Part | How many | Needs to win |
|---|---|---|
| Singles | 4 | One selection |
| Doubles | 6 | Two selections |
| Trebles | 4 | Three selections |
| Four-fold accumulator | 1 | All four |
| Total | 15 |
Each way, every line has a win part and a place part, so the slip holds 30 bets. In the place part a selection counts if it wins or places, which is why a horse that finishes second still keeps half of the slip alive.
How the return is worked out
Each bet pays its stake multiplied by the decimal odds of every selection in it. A loser makes that bet worth nothing.
- Decimal odds from a fraction: 3/1 is 4.00, 5/2 is 3.50.
- Place odds at 1/4: the fractional part is divided by four. 3/1 becomes 3/4, or 1.75 in decimal.
- Void: the selection counts as 1.00, so a double becomes a single.
- Dead heat: the win part is paid on the stake divided by the number tied.
The total return is the sum of all fifteen bets, or thirty each way. Profit is that figure minus the total stake.
Worked example: two winners and one placed
Four horses at 3/1, 5/2, 4/1 and 6/1, 50p each way. That is 30 bets at 50p, £15 in all. The 3/1 and the 5/2 win, the 4/1 finishes in the places, the 6/1 is unplaced. Place terms are 1/4 odds.
Win part. Only bets made up entirely of the two winners pay.
| Win bet | Calculation | Return |
|---|---|---|
| Single, 3/1 | 0.50 × 4.00 | £2.00 |
| Single, 5/2 | 0.50 × 3.50 | £1.75 |
| Double, 3/1 and 5/2 | 0.50 × 4.00 × 3.50 | £7.00 |
| £10.75 |
Place part. At a quarter of the odds the three runners that placed pay 1.75, 1.625 and 2.00.
| Place bet | Calculation | Return |
|---|---|---|
| Single, 3/1 | 0.50 × 1.75 | £0.88 |
| Single, 5/2 | 0.50 × 1.625 | £0.81 |
| Single, 4/1 | 0.50 × 2.00 | £1.00 |
| Double, 3/1 and 5/2 | 0.50 × 1.75 × 1.625 | £1.42 |
| Double, 3/1 and 4/1 | 0.50 × 1.75 × 2.00 | £1.75 |
| Double, 5/2 and 4/1 | 0.50 × 1.625 × 2.00 | £1.63 |
| Treble, all three | 0.50 × 1.75 × 1.625 × 2.00 | £2.84 |
| £10.33 |
The exact total is £21.078, shown as £21.08, for a profit of £6.08 on £15. The other 20 bets each include the unplaced 6/1, or include the 4/1 in the win part, and return nothing.
Why one winner rarely covers the stake
The four singles are what make a Lucky 15 different, and they are also why it disappoints with one winner. Take the same slip with only the 6/1 coming in and nothing else placed. The win single returns £3.50 and the place single £1.25: £4.75 back from £15.
Each way at 50p, a lone winner returns £1 plus 0.625 times its fractional price. At 20/1 that is £13.50; at 24/1 it is £16.00. The slip breaks even somewhere between 22/1 and 23/1. Short-priced selections with one winner lose money on every Lucky 15, and the slip only starts to pay well once two or more selections win, because that is when the doubles and trebles come into play.
This is where bookmaker bonuses matter, and why the Lucky 15 calculator leaves them out. Some sites pay double or treble odds on a single winner, others add a percentage when all four win. The terms differ by site, so the figures here are the plain return.
Lucky 15 versus Yankee
A Yankee is the same slip without the four singles: eleven bets, or 22 each way. At 50p each way it costs £11 instead of £15.
| Lucky 15 | Yankee | |
|---|---|---|
| Bets (each way) | 15 (30) | 11 (22) |
| Cost at 50p each way | £15.00 | £11.00 |
| Return, worked example above | £21.08 | £14.64 |
| Return, one winner at 6/1 only | £4.75 | £0.00 |
In the worked example the Yankee returns £14.64, a profit of £3.64. The extra £4 the Lucky 15 spent on singles brought back £6.44, so the singles paid for themselves. With one winner the Yankee returns nothing at all. The Yankee calculator works out that slip line by line.
SportsbookSportsbook and casino in one accountOpen sportsbook18+ · read the terms before your first depositRule 4 and non-runners
A horse withdrawn after the betting has formed is a non-runner. In the Lucky 15 calculator, mark it void: its singles return the stake, and every multiple with it in continues on the other selections.
The withdrawal also changes the race for the horses left in. Under Rule 4, fixed-odds winnings on the remaining runners are reduced by a deduction set by the withdrawn horse's price: the shorter it was, the bigger the deduction. It applies to the winnings, not the stake, and it can touch every line of a Lucky 15 that includes an affected horse. How place terms and Rule 4 work across a race card is set out on the horse racing betting page.
Lucky 15s outside racing
The slip is built for racing, but nothing stops four golfers in four tournaments, or four outright prices in other sports. Golf each way often pays more places than racing on the biggest events, and dead heats in top-finish markets are common, both explained on the golf betting page.
What the calculator does not include
- Lucky 15 bonuses. Extra odds on a lone winner, consolation payouts and all-winners bonuses vary from site to site and are not in the figures.
- Rule 4. The return is shown before any deduction.
- Payout ceilings. Each site sets a maximum return per bet and a withdrawal limit.
