Yankee Calculator: What Four Picks and Eleven Bets Pay
A Yankee turns four selections into eleven bets, and the return depends on which of them win. Enter the four prices and the results, and the calculator settles every double, treble and the four-fold for you, each way or win only.
A Yankee looks like one bet on the slip, but it settles as eleven. Work out by hand which doubles and trebles survive when one horse loses and another is a non-runner, and the arithmetic gets slow. This Yankee calculator opens with four fractional prices ready to fill in, and it settles every line as you type.

How to use the Yankee calculator
- Leave the bet type on Yankee. The calculator fixes the slip at four selections and eleven bets. The same list offers Super Yankee / Canadian, Heinz, Super Heinz and Goliath if you have more picks.
- Keep fractional odds or switch. Prices such as 6/4 or 11/8 are typed as they appear on a racecard. Decimal and American are there as well, and switching converts what you have already entered.
- Enter the stake and say whether it is per line or the total for the slip. Ten pence per line and £1.10 in total describe the same Yankee.
- Choose each way if you want it, with the place terms the site pays: a quarter, a fifth or another fraction.
- Mark each result: won, placed, lost, void, or a dead heat of two or three.
The Yankee calculator then lists the eleven bets with the total stake, the return and the profit.
What is inside a Yankee
Four selections can be combined in eleven ways once singles are left out. A Yankee takes all of them:
- Six doubles: every pair from the four, AB, AC, AD, BC, BD and CD.
- Four trebles: every group of three, ABC, ABD, ACD and BCD.
- One four-fold: all four together.
Each line carries the same stake, so a Yankee always costs eleven times the unit. Each way makes it 22 bets, a win part and a place part for each line, at twice the cost.
Why two winners are needed for any return
There are no singles in a Yankee. A bet only pays when every selection in it wins, and the smallest bet on the slip is a double. One winner completes nothing; two winners complete exactly one double; three complete three doubles and a treble; four complete everything.
Two winners mean some return, not necessarily a profit. If the two winners are short prices, the single double they make can pay less than the £1.10 the slip cost. Two evens shots, for example, return 10p × 2.00 × 2.00 = 40p.
The formula behind the return
For each line, the stake is multiplied by the decimal odds of every selection in it. A fractional price converts by adding one: 2/1 is 3.00, 6/4 is 2.50, 3/1 is 4.00, evens is 2.00. A loser sets its line to zero. A void counts as 1.00, so the line carries on without it. The Yankee calculator adds the eleven lines together for the total return, and profit is that total minus the stake.
Worked example: three winners and one loser
Four selections, 10p per line, £1.10 in total:
| Selection | Fractional | Decimal | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 2/1 | 3.00 | Won |
| B | 6/4 | 2.50 | Won |
| C | 3/1 | 4.00 | Won |
| D | Evens | 2.00 | Lost |
Enter those four results in the Yankee calculator and every line containing D is dead: three doubles, three trebles and the four-fold. Four lines remain.
- Double AB: 0.10 × 3.00 × 2.50 = £0.75
- Double AC: 0.10 × 3.00 × 4.00 = £1.20
- Double BC: 0.10 × 2.50 × 4.00 = £1.00
- Treble ABC: 0.10 × 3.00 × 2.50 × 4.00 = £3.00
Total return: £5.95. Profit: £5.95 − £1.10 = £4.85.
Had D won as well, the slip would return £19.75: £4.85 from the six doubles, £8.90 from the four trebles and £6.00 from the four-fold.
Second example: the same slip with a non-runner
Now D is withdrawn instead of beaten. As a void it counts as 1.00, so nothing is lost; the lines that contained it shrink.
- The three doubles with D become singles on A, B and C: £0.30 + £0.25 + £0.40 = £0.95.
- The three trebles with D become the doubles AB, AC and BC again: £0.75 + £1.20 + £1.00 = £2.95.
- The four-fold becomes the treble ABC: £3.00.
- The untouched lines, three doubles and the treble ABC, pay £5.95 as before.
Total return: £12.85, more than double the result with D as a loser. Profit: £11.75.
The bigger full-cover family
The Yankee is the smallest full-cover bet that uses four-folds. Add selections and the same rule, every double up to the one big accumulator, produces much larger slips:
| Bet | Selections | Bets | Made of | Cost at 10p a line |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yankee | 4 | 11 | 6 doubles, 4 trebles, 1 four-fold | £1.10 |
| Super Yankee / Canadian | 5 | 26 | 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 four-folds, 1 five-fold | £2.60 |
| Heinz | 6 | 57 | 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-folds, 6 five-folds, 1 six-fold | £5.70 |
| Super Heinz | 7 | 120 | 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 four-folds, 21 five-folds, 7 six-folds, 1 seven-fold | £12.00 |
| Goliath | 8 | 247 | 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 four-folds, 56 five-folds, 28 six-folds, 8 seven-folds, 1 eight-fold | £24.70 |
Each step up costs more than twice the one below, while still needing two winners for the first penny back. All of them sit in the same bet-type list, and the bet calculator covers singles, accumulators and the rest of the range.

The two bets share the same eleven lines. A Lucky 15 adds four singles, one on each selection, so it is fifteen bets and £1.50 at 10p a line.
The difference shows at both ends. With one winner, a Yankee returns nothing while a Lucky 15 returns that single. In the worked example above, the Lucky 15 adds singles on A, B and C worth £0.30, £0.25 and £0.40, so it returns £6.90 for a £5.40 profit, against £4.85 on the Yankee. The extra 40p of stake bought 95p of return there; with all four losing, it is 40p more lost.
A Yankee suits a bettor who expects at least two of the four to come in and wants the multiples without paying for singles. A Lucky 15 suits someone covering a day with a single winner, and it is often placed each way on racing. The Lucky 15 calculator opens with each way already switched on.
Each way on a Yankee
In the Yankee calculator, an each way slip is two Yankees: one on the win and one on the places, at a fraction of the odds. The place part of each double or treble pays only if every selection in it wins or places. A horse that places without winning keeps the place lines alive and kills the win lines. Place terms depend on the race, and the horse racing betting guide explains how fields and race types set them.
What the calculator does not include
- Bonuses. Some sites add a percentage when all four win, or pay extra odds on a single winner in a Lucky 15. These vary by site and are not in the figures.
- Rule 4. In racing, a withdrawal after the market has formed reduces winnings on the other runners. The Yankee calculator shows the return before that deduction.
- Payout limits. Every site sets a maximum payout per bet. A Goliath with long prices can pass it.
- Starting price differences. The calculator uses the odds you type. If a bet settles at SP, enter the starting prices once they are known.
