March Madness 2027: the first 76-team bracket, the prices and our early view

The 2027 NCAA men's tournament will be the first with 76 teams, and it ends at Ford Field in Detroit on 5 April. The college season tips off on 1 November, so this is the point where futures are at their widest and least informed. This guide covers the new format, how college odds behave and where we stand before a ball is bounced.

The NCAA men's tournament changes shape in 2027. The field grows from 68 to 76 teams, the old First Four becomes a twelve-game Opening Round, and the season that decides who gets in only starts on 1 November. These March Madness predictions are written from that starting line: what the format is, how college prices behave, what the seed history says and where we would put early money, if anywhere.

How the 2027 tournament works

Every Division I conference sends its champion as an automatic qualifier. The selection committee fills the rest of the bracket with at-large teams, seeds the whole field and places it in four regions, each seeded one to sixteen. The bracket is revealed on Selection Sunday, 14 March 2027.

What is new is the bottom of the draw. Under the 68-team format, eight teams played four games in Dayton. From 2027, 24 teams play twelve games over two days, six in Dayton and six in Wichita. The NCAA says those 24 will be the twelve lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the twelve lowest-seeded at-large teams, and that there are no crossover games: champions of small conferences meet each other, and bubble teams from bigger leagues meet each other. After that the familiar 64-team, single-elimination bracket runs to the final.

That makes 75 games in all. It is the first expansion of the men's field since 2011, when it went from 65 to 68. Michigan start the season as champions, having beaten UConn 69–63 in the 2026 final.

Why college lines are softer than the NBA

An NBA bettor follows thirty teams that play each other repeatedly, and every injury report is public and scrutinised. College basketball has more than 360 Division I programmes. Most of them are rarely televised nationally, rosters turn over every spring through the transfer portal, and many mid-major teams play only a handful of games against opponents that the market knows well.

Sportsbooks cannot price that many teams with the same care, so they protect themselves with wider margins and lower limits, and their early numbers rely heavily on reputation. That is where the softness lies. A well-known programme with a thinner roster can be priced on its name for weeks, while a small-conference side with a strong rotation is priced on a schedule nobody watched.

The flip side is that information arrives slowly for you too. A college line in November is a guess by everyone involved. By March the market has four months of results, and the prices on tournament games are far sharper than those on a Tuesday night in December.

Seeds and upsets: what the record says

Seeds are the committee's ranking, not a probability, but the history behind them is the best starting point for any bracket. The figures below come from NCAA.com articles published during the 2026 tournament, so they include last March's first round.

  • 1 v 16. The top seeds are 162–2. UMBC beat Virginia in 2018 and Fairleigh Dickinson beat Purdue in 2023; no other 16 seed has won.
  • 2 v 15. Fifteen seeds have won 11 times, including three years in a row from 2021 to 2023.
  • 5 v 12. Twelve seeds are 58–106, a win rate a little above 35 per cent. High Point added the latest one by beating Wisconsin in 2026.

The pattern matters for betting more than for brackets. A twelve seed winning a third of the time is not a shock, and the market knows it: those games are usually priced close. The real question each year is whether the specific twelve is underpriced, not whether “a twelve will win somewhere”. The 2027 format adds an unknown, because the teams coming out of the Opening Round will have played two days earlier and travelled from Dayton or Wichita.

Bracket pools versus betting: futures, game lines and props

A bracket pool rewards being right about the shape of the whole tournament. Betting rewards being right about prices, one at a time. The two need different thinking.

Futures. Outright markets on the national champion, the Final Four and each region open months in advance. The margin built into a futures board is large, because the bookmaker spreads it across dozens of teams, and your stake is tied up until April. Early futures pay off only when your view of a team is clearly ahead of the market's.

Game lines. Once the bracket is out, each game gets a point spread, a moneyline and a total. These are the sharpest markets of the event, and the first two days produce 32 First Round games, more volume than at any other point in the college season.

Props. Player points, team totals and half markets appear for most games. They take less money than the main lines, which can make them softer, but limits are lower and the information on college players is thinner.

A popular approach in pools is to pick the favourite almost everywhere and choose your upsets carefully. In betting, the favourite at a short price is often the worst value on the board.

Early futures for 2027: our March Madness predictions

The only structured preseason order we found from an official source is Andy Katz's Power 44 on NCAA.com, published on 1 October 2026. It puts Florida first, ahead of Duke, Michigan State, Illinois and UConn, with Arizona, Tennessee and Texas next. Michigan, the holders, are 16th.

Our view: there is nothing worth backing at the very top yet. Florida and Duke will be the shortest prices in any championship market, and a short price five months out leaves no room for a single injury. If we take a position now, it is on a team ranked between fifth and fifteenth, where a strong November can halve the price.

Our pick for early interest: UConn. They reached the 2026 final, they are fifth in Katz's order and they should be priced behind the two favourites. Michigan, ranked only 16th, are the other side to watch: champions rarely start a season priced as outsiders, and if the price reflects the ranking rather than the programme, it may be generous.

These March Madness predictions are a starting position, not a recommendation to bet now. We will revisit them after the early-season tournaments in late November.

Where to watch

In the United States, the NCAA's announcement says all 75 men's games will air across TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV. Outside the US, rights are sold country by country to national broadcasters, and the NCAA's own March Madness channels list where each game can be seen.

Some betting sites also stream a share of their basketball to customers who are logged in. We looked for that feature when we chose the sites we list, but which games appear changes from one site to the next, and college games are covered less widely than the NBA.

Streams are shown to signed-in accounts on selected events, and the list differs between betting sites and between matches. 18+.

When does March Madness 2027 start?
Selection Sunday is 14 March 2027. The twelve Opening Round games follow on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 March in Dayton and Wichita, the First Round is on 18 and 19 March, and the national championship game is on Monday 5 April at Ford Field in Detroit, according to the NCAA schedule.
How many teams are in the 2027 tournament?
Seventy-six, up from 68. The NCAA confirmed the expansion on 7 May 2026. Twenty-four teams play in an Opening Round of twelve games, which leaves the familiar 64-team bracket from the First Round onwards.
What happened to the First Four?
It has been replaced by the Opening Round. Instead of four games in Dayton, there are twelve: six in Dayton and six in Wichita. The twelve lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the twelve lowest-seeded at-large teams take part, and automatic qualifiers only meet each other, as do at-large teams.
Has a 16 seed ever beaten a 1 seed?
Twice. UMBC beat Virginia in 2018 and Fairleigh Dickinson beat Purdue in 2023. NCAA.com, writing in March 2026, gave the top seeds a 162-2 record in the matchup since the field went to 64 teams in 1985.
Are your March Madness predictions tips to bet on?
No. Every pick on this page is our opinion, labelled as such, and it is written five months before the bracket exists. Injuries, transfers and conference form will change the picture many times. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
