NBA betting 2026-27: opening night, the market and our picks
The 2026-27 NBA season tips off on Tuesday 20 October with the Knicks raising a championship banner and LeBron James in a Philadelphia shirt. This page covers the calendar, how NBA odds react to the league's own reporting rules, our predictions for opening week and where the futures market stands.
Two weeks before tip-off, NBA odds already tell a story. The champions are not the favourites, the team they beat in the Finals is near the top of the board, and LeBron James has moved to Philadelphia. This page reads the 2026–27 season from a bettor's side: the calendar, the reporting rules that move prices, and what we expect from the first four nights.

The 2026–27 season: opening night and format
The regular season opens on Tuesday 20 October with three games. Boston visit Detroit at 3 p.m. Eastern, the Knicks host Philadelphia at 7 p.m. and raise their championship banner, and Oklahoma City travel to San Antonio at 9:30 p.m. The last night is Sunday 11 April 2027, when all thirty teams play at once. In between sit 1,230 games.
New York won the 2026 title by beating San Antonio in five games, and they also hold the NBA Cup. Their opening opponent is the most changed team in the league. Philadelphia added Jaylen Brown from Boston and then signed LeBron James, who starts his twenty-fourth season. Other moves that reshape early prices: Giannis Antetokounmpo is now in Miami and LaMelo Ball is in Minnesota.
The NBA Cup runs inside the regular season. Group games are played on Cup Nights, mostly Fridays, from 30 October to 27 November: sixty games in all. Eight teams go through to single-game knockouts, with quarter-finals on 4–5 December and semi-finals on 8–9 December in team arenas. The final is on Friday 11 December at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The rest of the calendar matters for futures. The trade deadline is 11 February, All-Star weekend is 19–21 February in Phoenix, and the play-in runs from 13 to 16 April. Places one to six in each conference go straight to the playoffs. Seven hosts eight, with the winner taking the seventh seed; nine hosts ten, and the loser of that game is out. The loser of seven against eight then hosts the winner of nine against ten for the last seed. The playoffs start on 17 April and the Finals on 3 June.
How NBA odds are written and why they move
The basketball betting guide explains the moneyline, the spread and the total. Here we go one step further, into what makes NBA odds specific to this league.
Reading a futures price. American odds convert to an implied chance with simple arithmetic. A team at +270 returns 370 for 100 staked, so the price implies roughly 27 per cent. Add up the implied chances of all thirty teams in an outright market and the total comes well above 100: that excess is the margin, and on futures it is far wider than on a single game. Bettors in the Philippines and Europe who read decimal odds see the same price as 3.70.
The reporting clock. The NBA sets fixed times for teams to declare who may miss a game. By 5 p.m. local time the day before, every doubtful player must be listed with a reason. On game day a second report is due between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time, or between 8 and 10 a.m. for early tip-offs. The second night of a back-to-back has its own deadline: 1 p.m. on the day. Lines move in steps around those times, and the price taken just before a deadline carries the most uncertainty.
Rest rules. Since 2023–24 the league's participation policy has limited how stars are rested. A star is any player picked for an All-Star or All-NBA team in the previous three seasons. Teams may not have more than one of them unavailable for the same game, and stars are expected to play in national TV and NBA Cup games. For bettors this narrows one old risk: a big name sitting out a showcase game for rest rather than injury. All three opening-night games are on national TV.
The schedule itself. Teams average 14.2 back-to-backs this season, no team has more than sixteen, and nobody plays four games in five nights. Fewer tired legs means fewer rest days to guess at, but the second night of a back-to-back is still where NBA odds are hardest to set before the report comes in.
Opening week: our NBA predictions
The table covers five games from the first three nights. The six opening-night teams all start rested, so those prices should settle on form, rosters and home court rather than fatigue. Every view below is our opinion. The spreads are our estimates of a fair line, not quotes from any sportsbook, and the home team is listed second.
| Game | Date | Our view | Expected spread (estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Celtics at Pistons | Tue 20 Oct, 3 p.m. ET | Pistons. Boston's first game without Jaylen Brown, and it comes on the road. | Pistons -4.5 |
| 76ers at Knicks | Tue 20 Oct, 7 p.m. ET | Knicks. Banner night at home, against a roster still learning to play together. | Knicks -4 |
| Thunder at Spurs | Tue 20 Oct, 9:30 p.m. ET | Spurs, narrowly. The two teams at the top of the futures market, and home court tips it. | Spurs -2 |
| Timberwolves at Heat | Wed 21 Oct, 7:30 p.m. ET | Heat. Antetokounmpo's first home game against a Minnesota side still fitting Ball in. | Heat -3 |
| Nuggets at Thunder | Thu 22 Oct, 9:30 p.m. ET | Thunder. Their second game in three nights, but at home, with Gilgeous-Alexander against Jokić. | Thunder -5.5 |
Our strongest opinion is the Knicks. Champions at home on banner night tend to be priced on emotion, but our reasoning is about Philadelphia: two stars new to the club rarely look settled in the first week, and the champions have no such problem. If the line opens beyond Knicks -5.5, the price has run past our view and we would leave it.
The Thunder-Spurs game is the one to watch for the season's first futures signal. A clear result either way will move the outright board more than any other opening-week game.

The order of the market is clear, even if the exact prices have shifted. ESPN's report on 24 July 2026 had Oklahoma City and San Antonio as co-favourites at +270, with New York and Philadelphia next at +900. Covers' board on 28 July had the Spurs at 22 per cent, the Thunder at 20, the Knicks at 13 and the 76ers at 11.
Our view, and it is only an opinion: the market is right to put two Western teams on top, but it has priced the Knicks as if their title were a fluke. A side that won the Cup and the championship in the same season, and kept its rotation, is closer to the favourites than the gap suggests. Philadelphia is the most volatile price on the board. Two new stars, one of them in his twenty-fourth season, can lift a team or leave it short of minutes by March.
In the MVP market of 23 September, Victor Wembanyama led at +200, ahead of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at +350, Nikola Jokić at +550 and Luka Dončić at +600. Gilgeous-Alexander has won the last two awards and Jokić has three. One rule matters more here than form: in most cases a player must appear in 65 regular-season games to qualify. Our view is that the shortest price carries the most of that risk, because one long absence ends a bet that no on-court performance can rescue. A durable second favourite is the better shape of bet, not the better player.

Where to watch
In the United States, the league's national partners split the season: NBC and Peacock have the opening-night games, ABC and ESPN carry the Finals, and Prime Video has the play-in and the Cup knockouts. Elsewhere, national broadcasters carry the NBA, and the league's own League Pass, sold through NBA.com and the NBA App, shows games that are not on a national channel. Two regular-season games come to Europe in January: the Spurs play the Pelicans in Paris on 14 January and in Manchester on 17 January.
Some betting sites also stream a share of the games to signed-in customers. We looked for that when picking the sites on this page, though which games appear differs from one site to the next and is worth checking before a big night.
