Men's T20 World Cup 2028: Outright Prices, Format and How the Rules Settle Bets
India won the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup at home and became the first side to defend the title. The next edition goes to Australia and New Zealand in 2028 with a new group format. Here is how that format shapes the outright market, what rain and ties do to your bets, and our early view.
Twenty overs leave little room to recover from a bad hour, and that is what makes a T20 tournament hard to price. The best side in the world can lose a group match to a single over of hitting, and a short group stage gives it few chances to repair the damage. Reading T20 World Cup odds well starts with the format: how many matches a team gets, what separates teams level on points, and what rain does to a result.

The 2026 tournament in brief
India and Sri Lanka hosted the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup, and India won it. In the final in Ahmedabad on 8 March 2026 they made 255/5, the highest total in a T20 World Cup final, and bowled New Zealand out for 159 in 19 overs to win by 96 runs. Sanju Samson made 89 from 46 balls, and Jasprit Bumrah took 4/15, the first four-wicket haul in a final of this event.
The ICC listed three firsts for India: the first team to defend the title, the first to win it at home and the first to win it three times, after 2007 and 2024. Samson was named Player of the Tournament.
A few records from the event tell you how the scoring has moved, and bettors on totals markets should take note:
- Sahibzada Farhan of Pakistan scored 383 runs, the most by any batter in a single edition.
- India hit 106 sixes, the first time a team cleared 100 in a T20 international event.
- Finn Allen of New Zealand made an unbeaten hundred from 33 balls, the fastest at the tournament.
- The India v England semi-final produced 499 runs between the two sides.
The other result that matters for 2028 is one that did not happen. Australia, a seeded team in the first round, were not among the eight sides that reached the Super Eights.
The next edition: Australia and New Zealand, 2028
The ICC has confirmed that Australia and New Zealand will co-host the 2028 Men's T20 World Cup with 20 teams. The ICC pages we read give the year but not the dates or venues, so we leave those out until the governing body publishes them.
Twelve teams already have their places: the eight 2026 Super Eights sides (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, West Indies, England, South Africa and New Zealand), co-hosts Australia, and the three highest-ranked others in the men's T20I rankings at the cut-off, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland. The remaining eight places go through regional qualifying.
The format changes, and with it the maths behind early T20 World Cup odds on the outright market.
| Stage | 2026 | 2028 |
|---|---|---|
| First round | Four groups of five | Five groups of four |
| Second round | Super Eights: two groups of four | Super 10: two groups of five |
| Route to semi-finals | Top two in each Super Eights group | Super 10 group winners go through; second and third play Eliminators |
| Semi-finals and final | Knockout | Knockout, unchanged |
Two things follow for T20 World Cup odds. A group of four gives each side three matches, so one defeat can leave a strong team relying on net run rate. And the Super 10 rewards topping the group: second place means an extra knockout match before the semi-finals, which adds one more chance to lose for every contender that does not win its group.
How T20 tournament betting works
Points and tie-breakers. Under the 2026 playing conditions a win was worth two points, and a tie, no result or abandonment one. Teams level on points were split first by the number of wins, then by net run rate, then by their head-to-head match, and finally by T20I ranking. Group-stage points did not carry into the second round.
Net run rate. It is a team's runs per over scored minus its runs per over conceded across the group. A side bowled out early is charged its full 20 overs, which is why collapses hurt more than they look. Super Overs are not counted, and only matches with a result go into the figure. When you back a team to qualify, follow the run rate as closely as the points: in a four-team group it will often decide second place.
Rain and the DLS method. If overs are lost, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method sets a revised target. A match needs at least five overs bowled to the side batting second to count, and ten in the semi-finals and final; anything shorter is a no result. If the semi-final ends without a result, the team that topped its second-round group went through in 2026. A washed-out final with no result meant joint winners, so check how your site settles an outright bet in that case before you place it.
Super overs. A tied match goes to a Super Over: six balls each, two wickets end the innings, and the side with more runs wins. If that is tied, another follows, and they continue until there is a winner unless exceptional circumstances stop play. Most sites settle match bets on the Super Over winner, but the rules on ties differ between sites, so read the cricket terms before T20 World Cup betting on a close group.
Outright view for 2028
This section holds our T20 World Cup predictions, and it is opinion. The prices are our estimates of a fair market more than two years out, not quotes from any operator, and they will move once squads, venues and the qualifiers are known.
Our view: India are the side to beat. They won the last two editions, their batting set the 2026 records and their attack held the final together. Short T20 tournaments punish favourites, though, and a price much below 4.00 would leave too little for a match-by-match lottery.
| Team | Our estimate | Our reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| India | around 4.00 | Holders twice over; depth in batting and bowling |
| Australia | around 6.00 | Co-hosts, but missed the 2026 Super Eights |
| England | around 7.00 | Reached the 2026 semi-finals |
| South Africa | around 8.00 | Super Eights side in 2026 |
| New Zealand | around 9.00 | 2026 finalists and co-hosts |
| The field | the rest | Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies and qualifiers |
Our pick for value at this distance is New Zealand at the expected price. They reached the last final, and they will play part of the event at home. India remain the most likely winner; that is a different question from the best bet. Read these T20 World Cup odds as a starting point and stake small this far out.

Where to watch
The ICC sells the rights country by country, so the national broadcaster holding the rights in your market, and the ICC's own channels for highlights, are where to look. Some betting sites also stream a share of cricket inside the account once you are signed in. We picked several sites that do, but the matches each one carries are not the same, so check before the tournament if watching on the site matters to you.
