How the Eredivisie is priced

Most match odds start from the gap between the big three and everyone else. When PSV, Ajax or Feyenoord play at home against a side from the bottom half, the favourite is usually short enough that the result market holds little value, and the interest moves to the handicap. The useful question is not whether the favourite wins but by how many, and whether a team that has just sold its best attacker still wins by three.

Goals are the second pillar. Last season produced 972 goals in 306 matches, an average of 3.18 per game, according to the season's records. In a league scoring at that rate, over 2.5 goals is often priced as the expected outcome rather than the bet against it. For games involving a top side, the 3.5 line, team goals and both teams to score usually say more about a match than the headline total does.

The summer of 2026 shows why squad turnover matters. PSV sold Ismael Saibari to Bayern München for a reported 50 million euros and Joey Veerman to Borussia Dortmund for 22 million. Ajax sold Mika Godts to Paris Saint-Germain for 45 million and Sean Steur to Newcastle United for 23.5 million. Feyenoord lost Ayase Ueda, the league's top scorer last season with 25 goals, to Lille. AZ sold Troy Parrott to Real Betis and Sven Mijnans to PSV. Early in a season, prices for these clubs carry last season's reputation, and some of the players who built it have already gone.

It works the other way too, and it is the main reason our eredivisie predictions start from the current squad rather than last season's table. NEC finished third last season with 59 points, then sold Kodai Sano to PSV and Başar Önal to Lille. They are eleventh after seven rounds. Anyone pricing NEC from last season's table was paying for a squad that no longer exists.

Matchday 8: our Eredivisie predictions

The league returns on Friday 9 October with matchday 8. Below are our eredivisie predictions for five of the nine fixtures. Each pick is our opinion. The expected price is our estimate of fair decimal odds for that outcome, not a price quoted by any operator.

PSV v sc Heerenveen. PSV lost at Twente before the break, but they have scored 24 times in seven games. Heerenveen won 4–0 at Sparta Rotterdam on the same weekend and have conceded only 9. Our view: PSV to win, with the handicap left alone, because Heerenveen's defensive record argues against a wide margin.

Feyenoord v AZ. Second hosts first, and neither has lost. Feyenoord have the best attack in the league and AZ the best defence. Our view: both teams to score. Feyenoord at home are the likelier winner, but at the short price the result market is likely to offer, we prefer goals at both ends.

Fortuna Sittard v FC Twente. Fortuna are sixth on 13 points with a goal difference of minus one, which suggests their results are running ahead of their performances. Twente have conceded 7 and came from behind to beat PSV in their last game. Our view: Twente draw no bet.

Ajax v NEC. Ajax had 80.8 per cent of the ball against Excelsior and still drew 2–2, according to the league's review. NEC have won two of seven after losing two of last season's best players. Our view: Ajax to win with over 2.5 goals.

FC Utrecht v Willem II. Utrecht have the worst defence in the division and Willem II have scored only six goals all season. One side cannot keep goals out; the other has to come forward from a bottom-two position. Our view: over 2.5 goals.

Outrights: title, Europe and relegation

Everything in this section is our opinion, based on the table after seven rounds and the summer sales above. Season-long eredivisie predictions carry more uncertainty than single matches, so treat the views below as a starting point.

Title. PSV won last season with 84 points, 19 clear of Feyenoord, and sealed it on 5 April 2026. That margin is why they remain favourite in most markets. Our view: the PSV price reflects last season more than this one. They lost two senior midfielders and have already dropped five points. Feyenoord, unbeaten with the strongest attack, are the side we would rather back at a bigger price. AZ lead, but leading after seven rounds is not the same as leading after thirty-four.

European places. First goes straight into the Champions League league phase, second into the Champions League third qualifying round and third into the Europa League second qualifying round. Fourth enters the European play-offs for a Conference League qualifying place, and the cup winner takes a Europa League league-phase spot. Our view: Twente are the likeliest club outside the big three to finish fourth or higher. Seven goals conceded in seven games is a profile that tends to hold over a season.

Relegation and the play-off. The clubs finishing 17th and 18th go down directly. The club in 16th goes into the promotion and relegation play-offs against teams from the second tier. Our view: Willem II and ADO Den Haag are the two most likely to go down, and PEC Zwolle, with 6 scored and 20 conceded, are the strongest candidate for 16th. Utrecht's start is the bigger surprise, but they finished sixth last season and we expect them to climb clear.

Start there for confirmed schedules, because kick-off times can move once the European fixtures are set.
