Dota 2 Betting: Reading the Draft Before You Read the Odds
Dota 2 betting is decided as much in the draft as in the game. Here is how Dota 2 markets work, why patches move prices more than in any other esport, which numbers to check before a bet, and how BLAST Slam IX in November fits the season.
Dota 2 betting is the most strategic of the big esports markets. Games are long, the hero pool is enormous, and much of a match is settled before the first creep wave, in the draft, where teams pick and ban heroes in turn. Prices react to that draft, to the current patch and to roster changes more sharply than in any other game.

How a Dota 2 series works
Professional Dota 2 is played as best-of-two in some group stages, best-of-three in most playoffs and best-of-five in grand finals. A best-of-two can end 1–1, which is why the draw is a real market in Dota 2 group stages. Each game lasts roughly 30 to 50 minutes and ends when one team destroys the other's Ancient.
The markets that matter
| Market | What you bet on | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Series winner | who wins the series | includes a draw in best-of-two groups |
| Game winner | one named game | usually opens once the previous game ends |
| Kill handicap | kills given or taken, e.g. -7.5 | for heavy favourites |
| Total kills | over or under a line | aggressive patches push totals up |
| Game duration | over or under a time, e.g. 38:30 | late-game drafts favour overs |
| First blood, first tower, first Roshan | early objectives | live and pre-game |
Kill totals and duration are the markets where knowledge of the patch pays most. A patch that rewards fast, aggressive drafts pushes both kills up and duration down.
The draft: the moment that moves the price
Teams alternate bans and picks until each has five heroes. Experienced bettors watch three things:
- Comfort picks. Heroes a team or a player wins with often. Banning them early is a strong signal of respect.
- Timing. Some drafts want to win before 30 minutes, others want the game to go long. That links directly to the duration market.
- Counters. A last pick that answers the opponent's core hero can shift a game's price by several points.
Many sportsbooks keep game markets open during the draft and update them as picks come in, which is where live betting on Dota 2 is most interesting.
Patches and form
Dota 2 updates through the season, and a large patch can reshape which teams are strong. The first event after a patch is the hardest to price: results from the previous version tell you less than usual, and markets often lean too heavily on reputation. Recent form on the current patch is a better guide than a season's results.

Take a best-of-three priced at 1.45 on the favourite and 2.75 on the underdog. The implied probabilities are 69.0% and 36.4%, which add up to 105.4%: a margin of about 5.4%. A kill handicap on the same match might offer the favourite at -6.5 kills at 1.90 and the underdog at +6.5 at 1.90, a margin of 5.3% spread evenly. Neither price is wrong in itself. The question is which side of each line the draft supports.
If the favourite drafts for a slow, late game, its win price may still be fair, but the -6.5 kill handicap gets harder: late-game drafts trade fewer kills early and often win by structures rather than fights. The same draft makes the duration over more attractive. That is the core skill in Dota 2 betting: reading one draft across three or four markets at once, rather than looking at the series price alone. Our odds calculator does the conversion for any Dota 2 odds you see.
What to look for in Dota 2 betting sites
Most sportsbooks list the big events. The difference between Dota 2 betting sites shows up below the top tier and inside the game:
- Depth of coverage. Does the site price qualifiers and tier-2 leagues, or only the Slams and The International?
- Game markets during the draft. The best sites keep the next game open while picks and bans come in, and update the price pick by pick.
- Dota-specific props. First blood, first tower, first Roshan, kill totals and duration lines are what separate an esports book from a generic one.
- Settlement rules. Check what happens to a game bet if the match is replayed after a technical pause, and whether a best-of-two draw voids or settles your series bet.
- Limits on small events. Tier-2 markets often carry lower maximum stakes, which is a sign of how thin the liquidity is.
Tier one, tier two and integrity
Top-tier Dota 2 is played by organised teams with salaries, coaches and a reputation to protect. Lower tiers are different: smaller prize pools, younger rosters and less scrutiny. Match-fixing cases in Dota 2 have almost all come from those lower tiers, which is why we confine our previews to established events and why a strange price movement on an obscure match is a reason to stay out, not to follow the money.
BLAST Slam IX
The next big event on the Dota 2 calendar is BLAST Slam IX, scheduled for 20 to 29 November 2026. Sixteen teams play four GSL groups of four, every series best-of-three, followed by a double-elimination playoff with a best-of-five grand final. The prize pool is $750,000. Our BLAST Slam IX page follows the event as the field is confirmed.

Where to watch Dota 2
Major Dota 2 events are broadcast free by the organiser, BLAST on its own channels for the Slam series, with English and Russian streams usually available. Some betting sites show streams or trackers on selected matches to signed-in accounts, and the selection differs from site to site.
The account behind a Dota 2 bet
The same wallet and terms apply to a Dota 2 bet as to any other. The crypto betting sites page compares cashiers, and the esports betting section covers the other games.
The Dota 2 players we profile
Each profile covers the player's role, team, recent results and what the player means for the draft and the match price.
